As the national capital and its surrounding areas continue to endure severe hot weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Wednesday that the monsoon is expected to reach Delhi-NCR around June 30. The IMD also mentioned the likelihood of dust storms and light rainfall in Delhi over the next few days, offering a brief respite from the heat.

IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar informed ANI that the monsoon is anticipated to arrive in Delhi-NCR around June 30. He added that dust storms and light-intensity rainfall are expected in Delhi. The IMD has forecast that heatwave conditions will persist across many parts of northern India.

IMD scientist Soma Sen mentioned to ANI that there is a possibility of rain in Delhi, referred to as pre-monsoon showers, due to southwesterly winds over the next three to four days. This rainfall could reduce the heatwave. The increasing discomfort due to moisture in the area indicates that humidity is rising.

The severe heatwave sweeping through India has resulted in at least five deaths in New Delhi this week, as reported by the Times of India. This follows the hottest night in six years. Billions across Asia are struggling with extreme heat this summer, a trend that scientists attribute to human-driven climate change.

The deaths in New Delhi were reported from various hospitals since Monday. The city’s water shortages have worsened, and power consumption reached an all-time high on Tuesday when the nighttime temperature was 33.8 degrees Celsius (93 F).

Since March, temperatures in Delhi and the nearby desert state of Rajasthan have soared to 50 degrees Celsius (122 F). This season, the number of heatwave days recorded in northwest and eastern India has more than doubled. The conditions are attributed to fewer thundershowers and warm winds blowing from neighboring arid regions into India.
