Kerala changes anganwadi menu from upma to biryani after toddler’s cute request to health minister goes viral
A young boy’s request for biryani and chicken fry instead of upma at his local anganwadi has prompted a menu review at childcare centers across Kerala. The boy, Shanku, was captured in a viral video asking his mother for the different meal options. Kerala’s Minister for Health, Women and Child Welfare, Veena George, shared the video and announced the menu revision.

Minister acknowledges child’s request

In the video, a child named Shanku is seen making the request while wearing a cap. George responded by stating that the menu would be reviewed, taking his suggestion into account. “The menu will be reviewed, taking Shanku’s suggestion into account,” she said, extending her regards to the child, his mother, and the anganwadi staff.

Anganwadi meal plans and government initiatives

The minister emphasized that anganwadis provide a variety of food options to ensure children receive proper nutrition. “Under this government, a scheme to provide eggs and milk through anganwadis has been successfully implemented. In coordination with the Department of Women and Child Development, local bodies provide a variety of foods in anganwadis,” she said.

Social media reaction and public support

The video, originally posted by Shanku’s mother on Instagram, was filmed while he was eating biryani at home. It quickly went viral, with several people offering to provide the child with biryani and chicken fry. Many social media users supported the request, with some suggesting that the government should reduce food allocations for prisoners and instead improve meals for children in anganwadis.
