But, finally, Interstellar has been re-released in India, and fans turned up in droves.
According to trade website Sacnilk, Interstellar, which has been released in 2D and IMAX formats for a limited period of time in India, opened to almost Rs 2.5 crore on Friday. It is reportedly one of the biggest re-release openings for an English film in India. With photos of packed houses, and long-winding lines coming in from various theatres across the country, it is clear that Interstellar will only grow from strength to strength over the weekend.
Incidentally, this week has been one of the most lucrative for re-releases in recent times, as the 2016 Hindi film Sanam Teri Kasam earning Rs 4.5 crore on Friday. Interstellar and Sanam Teri Kasam have challenged this week’s new releases, Loveyapa and Badass Ravikumar, which managed to gross Rs 1.25 crore and Rs 2.75 crore, respectively.
Nevertheless, the impact of Nolan and Interstellar on the Indian audiences is there for everyone to see, as social media is flooded with reactions of fans watching the film for the first time on the big screen. The film, which was headlined by Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, and Michael Caine, continues to inspire conversations about the effective marriage of science fiction and human emotions. Insterstellar grossed over $700 million worldwide, and received positive reviews at the time of its original release.
