Pune<\/a> Rains: Pune experienced severe disruption<\/a> due to heavy and incessant rains, leading to widespread flooding<\/a> and four fatalities<\/a> on Thursday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD<\/a>) issued a ‘red alert<\/a>‘ for the district, urging people to take necessary precautions. Schools and colleges across the region declared holidays in response to the heavy rainfall warning<\/a>.Rain-related incidents claimed the lives of four individuals. Three men died of electrocution while trying to move their handcart in the Deccan area, and one person died in a landslide in the Tahmini Ghat section. Pune district has seen extensive damage, with rescue teams working to remove debris and reopen roads.<\/p>\n

Three men, Abhishekh Ghanekar, Akash Mane, and Shiva Parihar, died of electrocution while trying to move their food cart. In another incident, a landslide on the Pune-Kolad Road resulted in one death and one injury. Additionally, three people are feared trapped in a bungalow in Lavasa due to a mudslide.<\/p>\n

Water gushed into residential areas, leaving many residents stranded. The PMC started shifting residents from the low-lying areas of Patil Estate and other affected regions. Pune fire brigade reported numerous incidents of tree falling, wall collapse, and flooding of houses within 24 hours.<\/p>\n

Pune rains cause massive floods, evacuations begin<\/h2>\n

Several areas in Pune, including Sinhagad Road, Bavdhan, Baner, and Deccan Gymkhana, experienced severe flooding. Housing societies in these low-lying areas were particularly affected, prompting the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) fire brigade and disaster management cell to launch evacuation efforts. District Collector Suhas Diwase stated that water is being released from the Khadakwasla dam due to heavy rainfall in its catchment area.Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar reviewed the rain situation and instructed authorities to provide all necessary assistance to affected citizens. The IMD has forecasted continued heavy rains<\/a>, and disaster management teams, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), have been deployed in vulnerable areas.Persistent heavy rain led to power outages and waterlogging in multiple areas. The irrigation authorities increased the discharge rate from the Khadakwasla dam, exacerbating flooding along the Mutha River and in residential societies along its banks. Despite the disruption, flights and trains operated without major issues, although state transport bus services were reduced by 30%.The PMC began shifting 50 residents from the flooded low-lying areas of Patil Estate. Water from Hingne Khurd hills flowed into several houses at Sainagar. The Pune fire brigade responded to 45 incidents of tree falls, wall collapses, and flooding within 24 hours ending at 7am on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The IMD has issued a red alert for the next 24 hours, warning of continued heavy rainfall. Authorities are on high alert and continue to monitor the situation closely. The public is advised to stay indoors unless necessary and to stay updated on weather reports and safety instructions. <\/p>\n

Considering heavy rainfall in the ‘ghat’ (mountain pass) sections of Khed, Junnar, Ambegaon, Velha, Mulshi, Maval, Bhor, Haveli talukas and Pimpri Chinchwad as well as Pune city area, a holiday has been for schools. “As a precautionary measure, the disaster management cells and teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed at the low lying areas, where flooding and inundation is anticipated,” he said. <\/p>\n

Diwase appealed to step out of homes unless it is very important. The IMD has given a red alert for Pune district for the next 24 hours, he said. Meanwhile, 29 tourists who were stranded due to flooding at resorts and bungalows in Malavli area near Lonavala hill station in the district were evacuated on Wednesday evening, a police official said. <\/p>\n
