On May 2, 1999, Tashi Namgyal<\/a>, a local shepherd from the small village of Gharkon near Batalik in Kargil<\/a>, noticed unusual activity while searching for his lost yak. He spotted six men breaking stones and clearing snow, dressed in Pathani attire and army<\/a> uniforms, some carrying weapons. Namgyal, sensing the danger, immediately reported the suspicious movement to the local Army unit\u2019s Havildar Balwinder Singh and Havildar Nandu Ram.Now twenty-five years after the Kargil War was fought and won, Namgyal, a vigilant shepherd from Aryan Valley in Ladakh, seeks compensation for 18 yaks<\/a> lost during the conflict and official recognition in the form of a civilian honour<\/a>. While he receives an annual ration allowance and honours from the Army on Kargil Vijay Diwas<\/a>, he hopes for broader recognition from the Centre.<\/p>\n

Namgyal, who attended the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas with his daughter Tsering Dolkar, a teacher, expressed his longstanding wishes. “Govt provides compensation for various losses, but I have not received anything for my yaks. I am ready to provide all details through the village nambardar to get compensated,” he stated.<\/p>\n

Namgyal, now 58, lives in Aryan Valley in Garkon, which is part of the Union Territory of Ladakh. Despite his significant contribution, he feels let down by successive governments. He recognizes the annual honours he receives from the Army but wishes for more comprehensive acknowledgment. “I get Rs 18,000 a month as a ration allowance. The Army takes care of me whenever I need help. Although 25 years have passed, I still hope the Centre will give me some civilian honour for my contribution to the forces,” he said.<\/p>\n

Tsering Dolkar highlighted her father’s contributions during the Kargil War. “My father is a hero for me and the entire country. He made a huge contribution to the victory in the Kargil War. He deserves the country\u2019s civilian honour,” Dolkar remarked.<\/p>\n

In May 1999, Namgyal reported suspicious movements to the local Army unit after spotting intruders<\/a>. He relayed the information to Havildar Balwinder Singh of the Punjab Regiment and Havildar Nandu Ram of Military Intelligence. Reflecting on that moment, Namgyal recounted, \u201cNandu Ram reassured me that if my information is correct, \u2018you will become India\u2019s hero, and my name will be written in golden letters\u2019. All financial hardships would be over.\u201dNamgyal’s timely alert led to a swift mobilization of Indian troops, effectively thwarting the Pakistani<\/a> military\u2019s covert mission to sever the highway. The Kargil War, which raged from May 3 to July 26, 1999, ended in victory for India, with Namgyal emerging as a pivotal figure.As more time passes, Namgyal continues to wait for his due recognition and compensation. His vigilance and courage remain a significant part of the Kargil War\u2019s legacy. <\/p>\n
