Maldives President<\/a> Mohamed Muizzu has thanked India<\/a> helping strengthen the Maldives’ fragile economy<\/a>. The President was speaking official function held to mark the 59th anniversary of the country’s independence. In his address at the Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE), President Muizzu expressed deep appreciation for the support received from China<\/a> and India, which has been pivotal in easing the Maldives’ debt obligations and enhancing the nation\u2019s economic autonomy.President Muizzu acknowledged China’s substantial contribution to the Maldives\u2019 development efforts. He revealed that the Chinese government has agreed to postpone the repayment of loans and accrued interest from the Export-Import Bank of China (EXIM Bank) for a period of five years. In addition, President Muizzu mentioned ongoing discussions with both Chinese and Indian officials regarding currency swap agreements. These agreements are anticipated to address local shortages of US dollars, further stabilizing the Maldives’ financial situation.<\/p>\n

Malidives hopes for India free trade deal<\/h2>\n

The UAE has also been supportive, with President Muizzu noting that the UAE government has extended the deferment of loan repayments for five years. The President also announced that his administration is negotiating a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom and hopes to establish a similar agreement with India in the near future.<\/p>\n

President Muizzu’s foreign policy shift is notable, given that he assumed office last year with a campaign focused on removing Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives. His initial stance involved a request for the withdrawal of approximately 80 Indian military personnel operating helicopters and Dornier aircraft provided by India.<\/p>\n

Maldives resumes medical evacuations with India-gifted aircraft<\/h2>\n

Following an agreement to replace the Indian military personnel with Hindustan Aeronautics employees\u2014who are deemed by the Indian government as qualified technical staff rather than military\u2014relations between the Maldives and India have improved. President Muizzu attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in ceremony and praised India’s financial aid of Rs 400 crore, seeking a restructuring of Maldives’ debt to India.<\/p>\n

President Muizzu last week announced the restart of these operations during the Independence Day function. The Dornier aircraft facilitated the evacuation of a patient from Haa Dhaal Hanimaadhoo to Male’, demonstrating the renewed cooperation between the two nations.Currently, Indian personnel are stationed at Hanimaadhoo to operate the Dornier aircraft and in Laamu Kadhdhoo and Seenu Gan for helicopter operations. A total of 76 Indian staff are based across these islands. The resumption of medical evacuations had faced criticism previously due to the halt in aircraft operations. .<\/div>\n
