The southwest monsoon<\/a> has intensified after a brief pause, delivering intense rainfall across Kerala<\/a> on Monday and triggering numerous incidents of mudslides. The northern districts, particularly Wayanad and Kozhikode, have been heavily impacted since Sunday night, with reports of fatalities and severe damage.In Wayanad, the relentless rain has led to fatal mudslides, with several people feared trapped and many dead in separate incidents. In Kozhikode, the situation is similarly grave. Strong winds have caused extensive damage in the high-range areas, including Thamarassery and Ambayathodu. Residents reported that powerful winds uprooted numerous trees, some of which fell on houses, causing significant destruction. In response to the heavy rains, district authorities in Thrissur have declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

IMD weather forecast<\/h2>\n

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts indicating that Kerala will continue to experience heavy rainfall over the coming days. Heavy rainfall ranging from 7 to 11 cm in 24 hours is expected in isolated areas across Kerala, from July 30 to August 1, 2024. Strong surface winds are forecast, reaching speeds of 30-40 km\/h with gusts up to 50 km\/hour. IMD said. The current weather patterns include a cyclonic circulation previously over north Chhattisgarh now positioned over southeast Madhya Pradesh, extending up to 7.6 km above sea level and tilting southward. Additionally, an off-shore trough extends from South Gujarat to the Kerala coast, contributing to the ongoing rainfall.<\/p>\n

Kerala rainfall warning<\/h2>\n

IMD;s heavy rainfall warning continues for Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargode on Tuesday. Yellow warnings for 7-11 cm of rain are extended to Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, and parts of northern Kerala. The yellow warning for heavy rainfall remains in effect for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasargode, from July 31 to August 1, 2024.<\/p>\n

Wind Warnings: Strong surface winds reaching 30-40 km\/h with gusts up to 50 km\/h are expected over Kerala on July 30. Squally weather with wind speeds of 35-45 km\/h, gusting to 55 km\/h, is predicted along and off the northern Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised against venturing into the sea due to these hazardous conditions.
