On Wednesday evening, Delhi<\/a> and the surrounding National Capital Region (NCR<\/a>) experienced heavy rainfall<\/a> that brought relief from the sweltering heat but resulted in severe waterlogging<\/a>. The downpour led to significant traffic disruptions<\/a> and water accumulation across various parts of the city.A house collapsed in the Sabji Mandi area of north Delhi following heavy rain<\/a> on Wednesday, a Delhi Fire Services official said. “We received a call at 8:57 pm regarding the collapse of a house in the Sabji Mandi area close to Ghanta Ghar near Robin Cinema. Five fire tenders were rushed to the spot,” an official said. Further details are awaited.<\/p>\n

The India Meteorological Department<\/a> (IMD) has issued a red alert for Delhi and adjacent areas due to the ongoing heavy rain. The IMD stated, \u201cClouds have converged over Delhi from all four sectors. Widespread Light\/Moderate Rainfall with isolated Intense to very intense Spell (3-5cm\/hr) likely over Delhi during next 2 hours.\u201d This red alert, calling for heightened vigilance, is valid until 9 pm.<\/p>\n

The heavy rainfall has led to extensive waterlogging in key areas, including Lutyen’s Delhi, Kashmere Gate, and Rajinder Nagar. Major roads, such as the Delhi-Noida Expressway and Mathura Road, witnessed long queues of vehicles. Additionally, at least ten flights were diverted from Delhi’s IGI airport due to the adverse weather conditions.<\/p>\n

The IMD has forecasted intermittent showers in Delhi until August 5. He emphasized, \u201cApart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres.\u201d<\/p>\n

In July, Delhi’s average maximum temperature was recorded at 35.8\u00b0C, slightly above the long-period average. The high humidity, often exceeding 50%, created a Heat Index (HI) of 45.8\u00b0C, making it feel significantly warmer. On Tuesday, the city saw its highest maximum temperature of the month at 39.3\u00b0C, five degrees above the seasonal norm. On Wednesday morning, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 30.4\u00b0C, 3.3 degrees above the normal for this time of year, with humidity at 63% at 5:30 pm.<\/p>\n

The heavy rain has also affected nearby areas such as Noida, Gurgaon, and Ghaziabad. Waterlogging was reported in locations including Old Rajinder Nagar, where three IAS aspirants tragically drowned in basement flooding. Other affected areas include Gaur City, Film City, and multiple underpasses on the Delhi-Noida Expressway. In Gurugram, key roads such as Subhash Nagar and Old Railway Road experienced significant water accumulation.<\/p>\n
