The rescue teams deployed hi-end gadgets and pressed sniffer dogs into service as they stepped up efforts to look for survivors beneath the mud and debris in the worst rain calamity in Kerala\u2019s Wayanad region<\/a> on the fifth day of their mission on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The death toll mounted to an estimated 340, but the officials fear the numbers might go up as about 250 people are still missing. The authorities have identified 146 bodies.<\/p>\n

The construction of the 190-foot-long Bailey Bridge<\/a> between Mundakkai and Chooralmala helped movement of heavy machinery and ambulances, accelerating the rescue efforts<\/a>. The authorities have been using drones and radars sparing no effort in detecting signs of life.<\/p>\n

Offers of help to build houses for the displaced have been pouring in giving a shot of confidence to the authorities. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan<\/a> said the government will speed up plans to rehabilitate thousands of displaced people by implementing a township project. The government will identify a safe place for the project.<\/p>\n

About10,042 people have been sheltered in 93 relief camps in Wayanad district.<\/p>\n

The neighbouring Karnataka has offered to build 100 hourses, winning the praise of AICC leaders Rahul Gandhi<\/a> and Priyanka Gandhi. The Congress party said it will build 100 houses. Kozhikode Business Club and NSS have come forward to build 50 and 150 houses, respectively.The state government announced an immediate aid of Rs 4 crore for the people affected by the disaster. The Wayanad district administration will use the money for relief efforts. The CM announced a special cell called Help for Wayanad, headed by a senior IAS officer, to coordinate various relief efforts for the victims. (email: letushelpwayanad@gmail.com).Congress MP Shashi Tharoor participated in the relief efforts by personally unloading two truckloads of supplies. \u201cWhile there is no shortage of food in the relief camps, the homeless are sleeping on floors. We have brought soft and spongy bedrolls for them along with other supplies,\u201d he posted on X.<\/p>\n

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, who is a lieutenant colonel in the territorial army, visited the affected areas in Wayanad in an army fatigue and discussed with army officials. The popular actor is a part of the 122 Infantry Battalion, which is leading the rescue efforts. One would understand the scale of destruction only after visiting the site, he told the media. He announced Rs 3 crore from Viswasanthi Foundation, a nonprofit named after his parents, to provide succour in Wayanad.
