The Land and Development Office<\/a> (L&DO) has decided to pause the eviction process at Delhi’s Khyber Pass<\/a> area, impacting Olympian Samaresh Jung<\/a> and approximately 200 other residents. This development follows a petition filed by Jung in the Delhi High Court, with a hearing scheduled for August 5.<\/p>\n

Jung, who recently returned from the Paris Olympics, was taken aback upon finding an eviction notice<\/a> at his family\u2019s residence. The property, which Jung has occupied for nearly 75 years, was deemed an “illegal construction,” and the L&DO had given him only 48 hours to vacate. Jung, known for his role as national pistol coach and his achievements in shooting, including his medals at the Commonwealth Games, requested a minimum of two months to relocate. “This was a property we were staying on for the last 75 years. In 1978, the land and structure were leased out to a Mr. Singh, and we have been paying rent to him since then,” Jung told PTI.<\/p>\n

The eviction notice from the L&DO arrived just hours after Jung’s return from Paris. “I came to know about it one hour after reaching home from Paris,” he said. The notice indicated that the land on which Khyber Pass is situated belongs to the Ministry of Defence, rendering the settlement illegal. Jung has expressed his willingness to comply with legal requirements but has emphasized the need for a reasonable period to vacate. <\/p>\n

“I am not above the law and I will vacate if this is what the law demands. But two days’ notice is not the way. At least give us a couple of months to move out,” he said. “Is it an emergency or war situation that we have to vacate in a day?”<\/p>\n

Jung, who is 54 years old, currently does not have another residence in Delhi. “Now, I have nowhere to go. I have a huge library of more than 1000 books and my brother has gone house hunting, and we are trying to pack everything,” he added.<\/p>\n

The demolition drive at Khyber Pass, located in the Civil Lines<\/a> area of New Delhi, commenced last month following a Delhi High Court ruling on July 9. This ruling allowed the demolition to proceed despite challenges from residents against the initial notice issued on July 1, which required them to vacate by July 4.The court’s final decision on July 9 noted that the petitioners had failed to provide sufficient documentation proving their ownership of the land, thus permitting the demolition under legal procedures.
