That brings us to this week\u2019s reader question from Robert Ball: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the heat index? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The heat index, or apparent temperature, considers humidity along with temperature to indicate how we really feel in the heat. That\u2019s why it\u2019s often called the \u201cfeels like\u201d temperature in forecasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Humidity is important because the body\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/heat-humans-stress-extreme-climate-change-physiology\">primary mechanism for cooling<\/a> in hot weather is sweating (<em>SN: 7\/27\/22<\/em>). When sweat evaporates from the skin, it carries heat away from the body. But if the air holds a lot of moisture, the evaporation of sweat slows down. In 100 percent humidity, little to no sweat evaporates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that the heat index has a major limitation: It was devised for shady conditions with little wind. If you\u2019re working or exercising outdoors, a more useful indicator would probably be the wet bulb globe temperature, or WBGT, which provides the apparent temperature in direct sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting the WBGT is a bit more complicated than calculating the heat index. You first measure the air temperature with a thermometer that is shielded from sunlight and moisture. Then, you measure the \u201cwet bulb\u201d temperature with a thermometer that\u2019s wrapped in a wet cloth, mimicking the cooling effect of sweating. Lastly, you need a thermometer inside a copper globe that\u2019s painted black and positioned in direct sunlight, to measure the heat stress from sunlight. Add 10 percent of the air temperature, 70 percent of the wet bulb temperature and 20 percent of the black globe temperature to calculate the WBGT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><span class=\"caption wp-caption-3142065\">The wet bulb globe temperature measures heat stress on the body in direct sunlight, factoring in temperature, humidity, wind speed and sunlight. It combines the standard air temperature (left, seen in Fahrenheit), the natural wet bulb temperature (middle), which simulates the cooling of sweat, and the black globe temperature (right), which reflects how hot it feels in direct sunlight. <\/span><span class=\"credit wp-credit-3142065\">Nicholas Institute for Energy, Environment &amp; Sustainability\/Duke University<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The takeaway here is that when compared to temperature alone, the heat index and WBGT can help provide a more complete picture of how we feel the heat, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov\/heatrisk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when we need to take measures<\/a> to avoid heat stroke and exhaustion.
