All India Sufi Sajjadanashin Council (AISSC<\/a>) \u2014 an apex body representing sufi shrines<\/a> from across the country led by Syed Naseruddin Chishty<\/a> from Ajmer dargah welcomed the government\u2019s proposal to amend the Wakf Board Act, reported TOI. <\/p>\n

The council is at odds with the position of All India Muslim Personal Law Board<\/a>. Chishty alleged that the wakf boards worked in a \u201cdictatorial\u201d manner and said that the dargahs<\/a> were one of the \u201cvictims\u201d of mismanagement and corruption eating into the wakf system. <\/p>\n

Christy said that sufi traditions are not recognised under the current law. He has raised a demand for a separate dargah board under the law. Representatives of prominent dargahs including Delhi\u2019s Nizamuddin Auliya and Agra\u2019s Fatehpur Sikri and representatives of sufi shrines from Rajasthan, Hyderabad and Karnataka were present at a press conference in Delhi.<\/p>\n

They said that the smaller dargahs were issued notices often leading to years-long legal battles. <\/p>\n

Chishty said that there are about 2,000 dargahs including small ones across the country and around 800 prominent ones are associated with the council.<\/p>\n

AISSC representatives met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval<\/a> and minority affairs minister<\/a> Kiren Rijiju on Monday. Chishty said they were assured that \u201call stakeholders will be consulted and amendments<\/a> will be in the interest of Muslims.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Rijiju in a post on X described the interaction with AISSC representatives as a \u201cfruitful and forward looking discussion\u201d and highlighted that they praised the efforts of PM Narendra Modi-led govt towards welfare of minorities.<\/p>\n

Chishty questioned those opposing the bill about how they had made up their mind without even seeing the Bill. He warned the Muslim community of \u201cfalse propaganda\u201d and an attempt \u201cto divide society based on religion.\u201dHowever, Chishty said that there was a need for wider consultations on the Bill with stakeholders. \u201cIn the present Waqf Act<\/a>, there is no mention of dargahs at all. Waqf Boards do not recognise traditions of the dargah as many of our traditions are not there in sharia, so we demand a separate Dargah Board,\u201d he told TOI.<\/p>\n

In their memorandum to Doval and Rijiju, Chishty said, \u201cOur council and various organisations have consistently submitted memorandums over the past decades, urging amendments to the law.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cFollowing a thorough examination of the draft Bill, we intend to submit our recommendations and proposal. Consequently, it is imperative that the proposed amendments prioritise the interests and safeguards of dargahs and their actual representatives,\u201d he added.
