The Bangladesh<\/a> Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed displeasure with India<\/a> for hosting ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina<\/a> after she fled Dhaka<\/a> and arrived in India on Monday, reported TOI. BNP<\/a> is questioning whether this action aligns with the spirit of mutual cooperation between India and Bangladesh, suggesting that India’s support for Hasina<\/a> makes cooperation difficult.<\/p>\n

Gayeshwar Roy, a veteran BNP member and former minister in the BNP-led government in 1991, voiced these concerns. Speaking from Dhaka, Roy stated, “BNP believes Bangladesh and India must have mutual cooperation… Indian govt will have to understand and behave in a manner which follows that spirit. But if you help our enemy then it becomes difficult for that mutual cooperation to be honoured. Our former foreign minister (in the Hasina govt) said here before the last elections that India will help Sheikh Hasina\u2019s return to office. Sheikh Hasina\u2019s liability is being borne by India… Indian and Bangladesh people don\u2019t have issues with each other. But should India promote one party and not the entire country?\u201d<\/p>\n

Addressing the perception that BNP is anti-Hindu, Roy remarked, \u201cA perception has been created that BNP is anti-Hindu. BNP is made up of people from different communities in Bangladesh and stands for all religions. I have been a minister in this party\u2019s regime and am ranked high enough in the BNP\u2019s highest decision-making forum. BNP is a nationalist party but we believe in the individual rights of all communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also highlighted BNP\u2019s contributions towards minority communities, stating, \u201cWhen I was a minister in 1991, I started the system of donations for Durga Pujas and no govt after that has stopped the policy, it is still on. It is our party\u2019s govt that did it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the issue of terrorist activities targeting India from Bangladesh, Roy commented, \u201cIt is a perception again. Not the truth. India has helped in getting our Independence… we cannot be against India.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasized the economic and social interdependence between the two countries by saying, \u201cWe are a smaller country, we need India for many things including medical facilities, many other goods for our people, but the revenue that India earns from Bangladeshis on these accounts are also not a small amount.\u201dRegarding BNP\u2019s relationship with Jamaat-e-Islami<\/a>, Roy clarified, \u201cit\u2019s not an ideological relationship. It is tactical support, which has to do with electoral politics.\u201dAccording to TOI report, Roy elaborated on the history of alliances, stating, \u201cAwami League was in an official alliance with the Jamaat. From 2018 to 2024 we (BNP) had no relations with the Jamaat. There was Left, there was right, but there was no Jamaat with us. Sheikh Hasina took the Jamaat on board. Later she created Hefazat-e-Islam<\/a> group to counter Jamaat. Today the same Hefazat is on the streets against Awami League<\/a>. Jamaat believes in elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

Touching on the process of forming a new interim government, Roy mentioned, \u201csince the students wanted Dr Mohammad Yunus<\/a> as the leader and a non-political govt as an interim arrangement, BNP did not suggest any names from the party.\u201d<\/p>\n

These statements from BNP highlight the party\u2019s stance on current political dynamics, their relationship with India, and their historical and present alliances. The party underlines the importance of mutual cooperation between India and Bangladesh while expressing concerns over perceived favoritism and its implications.<\/p>\n
