Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar<\/a> has condemned recent remarks<\/a> by Congress leaders<\/a> comparing the unrest in Bangladesh<\/a> to potential scenarios in India. Speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court<\/a> in Jodhpur, Dhankhar expressed his disapproval of these comparisons, which he believes undermine national stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cBe on watch out!! Efforts by some to infuse a narrative that what happened in our neighbourhood is bound to happen in our Bharat, is deeply concerning. How can a citizen of this country having been a Member of Parliament, and the other who has seen enough of Foreign Service takes no time in saying that what happened in the neighbourhood will happen in India!\u201d Dhankhar said.<\/p>\n

The Rajya Sabha Chairman also said that legislature and Parliament cannot script judgements, similarly judiciary cannot legislate or impart directives that are beyond legislation.<\/p>\n

“The role of all institutions are well delineated in the Constitution… it will be dangerous if there is incursion in the domain of one constitutional constitution by the other,” he said.<\/p>\n

Posing a question to the audience, he asked if these institutions (Legislature\/ Executive\/Judiciary) are working in their areas or are they in expansion mode to operate in the area of other.<\/p>\n

Emphasising the strength of all the three pillar institutions of the country, Dhankhar said their vulnerability would imperial our democracy and derail our development trajectory.<\/p>\n

“Our institutions are being exploited by these forces to set a narrative not only anti-national but also aimed at derailing our democracy. So let’s work together with the nation-first sentiments. Work to insulate our institution from nefarious designs for our democracy and if they manage to make some inroads, don’t be silent, neutralise them”, he appealed.<\/p>\n

“The forces inimical to Bharat are trying impede our growth and are operating at multiple levels tainting, tarnishing, targeting and diminishing our constitutional institutions,” he said warning that falling prey to them will have dangerous consequences.<\/p>\n

Congress Leaders\u2019 Remarks and Responses<\/strong>
On August 6, Congress leader Salman Khurshid<\/a> commented during a book release event that despite the seemingly normal situation in India, events similar to those in Bangladesh could unfold here. \u201cEverything may look normal on the surface,\u201d Khurshid remarked. Shashi Tharoor, also present at the event, added that while he could not clarify Khurshid\u2019s exact meaning, the broader message underscores the importance of democracy and free elections.<\/p>\n

In response, BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy criticized Khurshid\u2019s remarks as \u201canarchist,\u201d condemning the attempt to draw parallels between the two nations\u2019 political situations.<\/p>\n

Ongoing Crisis in Bangladesh<\/strong>
The situation in Bangladesh remains tense following the recent political upheaval. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faced a significant student-led uprising and protests, fled the country and sought refuge in New Delhi. Her 15-year tenure was marred by accusations of political repression, including the arrest of opposition leaders and suppression of dissent.<\/p>\n

The interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus has prioritized restoring \u201claw and order\u201d after mass protests led to over 450 deaths. The Awami League, Hasina\u2019s former ruling party, is in hiding following attacks on their offices, while opposition groups like the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) are beginning to rebuild.<\/p>\n

Reflections on the Emergency Period<\/a><\/strong>
Dhankhar also addressed the Emergency period imposed in June 1975 by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, describing it as \u201cthe draconian darkest period\u201d since Independence. Dhankhar expressed concern that during this time, even the highest levels of the judiciary, typically a “formidable citadel of basic rights,” yielded to the “brazen dictatorial regime”.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe highest court ruled that no one could move any court for enforcement of rights as long as the emergency lasted,\u201d Dhankhar noted. He commended the Rajasthan High Court and other High Courts for their courage in upholding the rule of law during these challenging times.<\/p>\n

“Liberty was held to ransom by an individual, and thousands across the country were arrested without any fault except that they believed in Bharat Maa and nationalism at heart,” he added.
