Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> made headlines on Sunday as he held an umbrella for farmers<\/a> during a heavy downpour while interacting with them at the India Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi. Despite officials suggesting the event be cancelled due to the rain, the Prime Minister insisted on continuing, even offering to hold umbrellas for the farmers as they conversed.<\/p>\n

During the event, PM Modi<\/a> released 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified crop varieties<\/a>, marking a significant milestone in the country’s agricultural innovation<\/a>. He emphasised the growing adoption of natural farming among farmers, highlighting their conscious efforts to reduce pesticide use and their responsibility towards environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n

PM Modi also reiterated his commitment to advancing agricultural innovation, particularly as he enters his third term in office. He cited recent initiatives aimed at farmers as evidence of this ongoing commitment. Drawing on the legacy of former Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, he added “Jai Anusandhan” (Hail Research) to the iconic slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan,” stressing the importance of research and innovation in agriculture.<\/p>\n

The 109 newly released crop varieties include seeds for cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and various horticultural crops like fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants. These varieties are expected to enhance farmers’ productivity, improve public nutrition, and boost agricultural exports.<\/p>\n

Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan<\/a> lauded the scientists behind these new seed varieties, noting that they will significantly benefit farmers and the nation. He emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to increasing farmers’ income and ensuring that innovations reach the fields effectively.<\/p>\n

As PM Modi dedicated these crop varieties to the nation, he underscored the importance of continuous agricultural research and the need to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and practical farming applications.<\/p>\n
