Touhid Hossain made the remarks when asked whether bilateral ties with India would be affected if Hasina’s stay in India gets prolonged. “This is a hypothetical question. If someone stays in a country why the relations with that particular country would be affected? There is no reason for that,” he said, emphasising that bilateral relations are a big matter.

Hossain, a career diplomat and former foreign secretary, reaffirmed that Bangladesh was committed to upholding all agreements made with other countries.

Hossain has emphasised the significance of maintaining equilibrium with “big powers”.

The interim government in Bangladesh in a rather bizarre move within days of taking charge, has threatened the local media with shutdown if they publish what it perceives as false news.

“A nation falters when the media does not uphold the truth,” the government’s home affairs adviser Brigadier General (retd) M Sakhawat Hossain said on Sunday and warned that the media outlets would face closure if they provided “misleading news”.The students’ organisation that led the protests against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina has released a list of over 50 senior Bangladeshi journalists and demanded a ban against them for their alleged closeness to the Hasina regime in what is the first such move in South Asia. Some of these journalists speaking on condition of anonymity said they feared for life.

Hossain, however, praised the role of Awami League in Bangladeshi politics.

“The party has made many contributions to Bangladesh – we acknowledge that,” Hossain told the media in Dhaka on Monday. “They should participate in the elections when the time comes.”

Meanwhile, the police returned to Dhaka streets on Monday after a week-long absence. Law and order situation across Bangladesh had been adversely impacted with the police force deserting stations following attacks on several policemen after the fall of the Hasina regime last Monday.

The interim administration on Sunday said it had noted with “grave concern” some attacks on Hindus and other minorities. In its first official statement, the cabinet said it would work to “find ways to resolve such heinous attacks.”

Hindus account for around 8% of the country’s 170 million people and have been the targets of violence whenever a non-Awami League government has been in power.

Businesses in Bangladesh are facing a liquidity crunch since the fall of the Hasina government. Experts on Bangladesh economy told ET that the country faces an uphill task in the absence of a regular government to achieve its target to graduate from its least developed country (LDC) status to become a developing country by January 2026.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed concern over attacks on the Indian cultural centre, temples, and Hindu homes in various locations in Bangladesh. The former minister of state for external affairs called upon Muhammad Yunus and his interim government to take immediate action to restore law and order for the benefit of all Bangladeshis regardless of their faith.

In an X post, Tharoor also accused “anti-India vandals” of destroying statues at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex in Mujibnagar.

Source link

Foreign Affairs adviser of Bangladesh‘s interim government has said that deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina‘s stay in India will not hurt bilateral relations and Dhaka will always try to maintain good relations with New Delhi.
