Assam assembly on Thursday passed a bill for compulsory registration<\/a> of Muslim marriages<\/a> and divorces. The Assam Compulsory Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces<\/a> Bill, 2024, was introduced by minister Jogen Mohan on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Speaking in the assembly during a discussion on the bill, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday said that after the implementation of this new law<\/a>, registration of marriage with a minor will be considered illegal and Muslim marriage will be registered by the government<\/a> and not a Qazi<\/a> (Muslim cleric).<\/p>\n

Sarma said that in places like Kerala and Jammu and Kashmir, registration of Muslim marriages is done by the state government. <\/p>\n

“Today is a historic day for the daughters of Assam. After the implementation of the new law, registration of marriage with a minor will be considered a legal offence. Apart from this, now the registration of Muslim marriage will be done by the government and not a Qazi. Our government has only one objective: Whether a daughter is Muslim or Hindu, she should not face injustice. I request the people of Assam to support us and confine this practice to the pages of history. This practice has no place in modern Assam.”<\/p>\n

Sarma said all previous registrations of marriages by Qazis will remain valid and only new ones will come under the purview of the legislation.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Opposition parties led by Congress met governor Lakshman Acharya and demanded Sarma’s removal as the CM because of his alleged provocative statements that may disturb peace and harmony in the state. On Tuesday, Sarma had said that he won’t let ‘Miya’ Muslims<\/a> “take over” the state. Muslims comprise 34% of Assam’s 3.12 crore population.<\/div>\n
