India<\/a> will be among the top five<\/a> countries for semiconductor manufacturing<\/a> within the next five years, union minister for railways, telecommunication, electronics, and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

The construction of the four semiconductor units has also been started in record time, he said. The focus of India\u2019s semiconductor programme was to set up an entire ecosystem instead of throwing all weight behind setting up one chip foundry unit, Vaishnaw said at the Times Now Summit, 2024.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone for the country\u2019s first commercial chip foundry at Dholera in Gujarat. He had also laid the foundation stone for two outsourced semiconductor and assembly testing (OSAT) units at Sanand in Gujarat and Jagiroad in Assam.<\/p>\n

The foundation stone for the Tata-Powerchip Semiconductor Corp\u2019s semiconductor fabrication unit at Dholera, the Tata group\u2019s OSAT unit in Assam and the CG Power-Renesas Group combine\u2019s OSAT unit at Sanand has been laid in a record time of 15 days, Vaishnaw had then said.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Summit on Thursday, Vaishnaw said that the country would grow at a consistent rate of 6%-8% in real terms in the coming decade, which would be on the back of the growth achieved over the last decade.<\/p>\n

\u201cElectronics manufacturing was practically negligible 10 years back. Today, the electronics manufacturing<\/a> industry is $110 billion worth. Apple alone is hiring more than 1 lakh people who are employed in factories for iPhone manufacturing,\u201d Vaishnaw said, adding that the change over the last decade was fundamental.<\/p>\n
