Prime Minister Narendra Modi<\/a> Saturday termed crimes against women<\/a> and children a matter of “grave concern” for the society and said swift justice<\/a> will give them greater assurance of safety.<\/p>\n

The comments came in the backdrop of nationwide protests over the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital last month.<\/p>\n

“Today atrocities against women and protection of children is a grave concern of the society,” the prime minister said in his address at the inaugural ceremony of the two-day National Conference<\/a> on District Judiciary, organised by the Supreme Court<\/a> in New Delhi.<\/p>\n

“The faster justice is delivered in cases of atrocities against women, the greater assurance half of the population will have about their safety,” he said.<\/p>\n

Modi also emphasised on the need for implementing stricter laws for crimes against women and children, saying there are several stringent laws to deal with such crimes. But, he said, there was a need to ensure better coordination among the criminal justice system to ensure swift justice.<\/p>\n

“There were fast-track courts set up in 2019. There are also district committees. We need to make these committees better functioning. Women justice needs to be quick, only then will the trust increase,” he said.The prime minister said the three new criminal laws<\/a>, which came into effect across the country on July 1, are not just to punish the wrongdoers but protect the citizens as well.The new laws-Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita<\/a> and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam-have replaced colonial-era statutes with modern legal frameworks.<\/p>\n

“We have got our new justice system by the name of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita<\/a>. These laws represent the idea of citizens first, dignity first and justice first. Our criminal laws have been freed from colonial thinking. The idea of Nyaya Sanhita is not just to punish citizens, but to protect them as well. Strict laws have been made regarding crimes against women and children,” Modi said.<\/p>\n

He said that the new laws have also introduced, for the first time, community service as a punishment option for petty crimes.<\/p>\n

He added that a system is also in place to send summons in electronic mode to reduce the burden of pending cases on the judiciary.
