{"id":125820,"date":"2024-09-02T00:11:33","date_gmt":"2024-09-02T00:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/02\/hiking-energy-tax-will-hit-growth-oil-industry-says\/"},"modified":"2024-09-02T00:11:33","modified_gmt":"2024-09-02T00:11:33","slug":"hiking-energy-tax-will-hit-growth-oil-industry-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/09\/02\/hiking-energy-tax-will-hit-growth-oil-industry-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiking energy tax will hit growth, oil industry says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/1024\/branded_news\/d927\/live\/552edb60-5be4-11ef-8c32-f3c2bc7494c6.jpg?resize=1024,576&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"Hiking energy tax will hit growth, oil industry says\" title=\"Hiking energy tax will hit growth, oil industry says\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Raising the windfall tax on the UK&#8217;s oil and gas companies will hit the government&#8217;s main goal of growing the economy, the industry has warned.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Offshore Energies UK (OEUK) said the planned hike would cause investment in the sector to plunge and result in a loss of \u00a313bn to the UK economy from 2025 to 2029, putting 35,000 jobs at risk.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Its analysis follows previous concerns from firms over the Labour government&#8217;s plan to increase the windfall tax on profits made by energy companies.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A Treasury spokesperson said the government was committed to a &#8220;constructive dialogue&#8221; with the industry over changes to the tax.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/july-statement-2024-changes-to-the-energy-oil-and-gas-profits-levy\/changes-to-the-energy-oil-and-gas-profits-levy\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Under government plans,<!-- --><\/a> the Energy Profits Levy &#8211; which is the official name of the windfall tax &#8211; is due to rise from 35% to 38% on 1 November on the profits oil and gas firms make in the UK. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Companies operating in the North Sea are already taxed differently to others. They pay 30% corporation tax on profits as well as a supplementary 10% rate. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It means from November, the total tax rate on profits made by energy firms in the UK is expected to rise to 78%.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The government has also announced it wants to extend the length of the levy until 2030, and that it will &#8220;tighten&#8221; investment allowances, which have allowed firms to reduce the amount of tax paid if they invest in projects, such as green energy, in the North Sea.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">OEUK said the policy changes would &#8220;undermine&#8221; the industry&#8217;s ability to &#8220;support the government\u2019s overarching goal of driving economic growth&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The industry body&#8217;s analysis claimed:<!-- --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-5c9c90b0-0 cnfHHs\">\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">The expected tax take from oil and gas producers would &#8220;increase in the very short term&#8221; by \u00a32bn but then would later result in a \u00a312bn loss in receipts.<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">A &#8220;rapid decline&#8221; in investment from \u00a314bn under the current tax policy to \u00a32bn by 2029. <!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">About 35,000 jobs would be at risk in 2029 alone due to projects not going ahead.<!-- --><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;This is a government that has made economic growth its main priority and yet our analysis shows that its policy will ultimately reduce this sector\u2019s contribution to the UK economy,&#8221; said David Whitehouse, OEUK chief executive.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Mr Whitehouse said for more than two years, UK oil and gas companies had paid &#8220;three times&#8221; the rate of corporation tax of any other sector.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Time is running out to mitigate damage that has already been done and to avoid further escalation,&#8221; he added. &#8220;The prime minister promised to manage the North Sea in a manner that does not jeopardise jobs. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;We now need an honest conversation on how we can do this and need government to work with the sector at pace.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Energy Profits Levy was first introduced by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in May 2022.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Oil and gas prices began to rise after the end of Covid lockdowns and surged following Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine, resulting in bumper profits for energy companies.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">With households being hit by soaring energy bills, the government came under pressure to help. It introduced the windfall tax to help fund a scheme to restrict gas and electricity bills, which has now ended.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Energy prices have fallen back since the peaks in 2022, but remain at a high level. The typical annual household energy bill <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c9qgy11w5dyo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">will rise by 10% from October<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">OEUK said the original EPL introduced was intended to be a &#8220;temporary tax in response to the economic environment at the time&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;These unprecedented oil and gas prices have since returned to align with long- term real averages, and the windfall conditions that the EPL was designed to address have passed,&#8221; it said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A spokesperson for the Treasury said: \u201cWe are committed to maintaining a constructive dialogue with the oil and gas sector to finalise changes to strengthen the windfall tax, ensuring a phased and responsible transition for the North Sea.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;Our plans for a new National Wealth Fund and Great British Energy will create thousands of new jobs in the industries of the future.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx287xq91e5o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Raising the windfall tax on the UK&#8217;s oil and gas companies will hit the government&#8217;s main goal of growing the economy, the industry has warned.
