Women\u2019s Forum\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saudi Arabia won an uncontested bid to lead a United Nations body dedicated to women\u2019s rights for the 2025 session, bringing condemnation from human rights groups that argued that the kingdom had an \u201cabysmal\u201d record on women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia\u2019s ambassador to the U.N., Abdulaziz Alwasil, was elected chairman of the Commission on the Status of Women, a U.N. body whose aim is to protect and promote women\u2019s rights around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Saudi state news agency wrote that the country\u2019s new chairmanship \u201cconfirmed its interest in cooperating with the international community to strengthen women\u2019s rights and empowerment\u201d and highlighted strides the country had made toward greater social and economic freedom for women.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the decision drew scathing criticism from human rights groups. Amnesty International\u2019s deputy director for advocacy, Sherine Tadros, said in a statement that Saudi Arabia had an \u201cabysmal record when it comes to protecting and promoting the rights of women.\u201d She argued that there was a \u201cvast gulf\u201d between the U.N. commission\u2019s aspirations and the \u201clived reality for women and girls in Saudi Arabia.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The commission, established in 1946, has 45 members that are selected based on geographic quotas. No vetting process is required for a country to be elected to the commission, and there is also no requirement that it meet certain standards of gender rights to join.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saudi Arabia had been expected to win the chairmanship, which typically lasts two years, and its bid was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/mar\/27\/saudi-arabia-un-womens-rights-commission\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> to have drawn <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/outrage-as-saudi-arabia-picked-to-head-womens-rights-forum\/a-68688738\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">no dissent<\/a> from other member states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Women in Saudi Arabia, a conservative Islamic kingdom, were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/09\/26\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-women-drive.html\" title=\"\">barred<\/a> from driving until 2018, and they were long subject to a pervasive system of control called guardianship that required them to obtain permission from a male relative in order to travel abroad, marry and make other important life decisions. For decades, religious police officers roamed the streets hunting for unmarried couples and shouting at women to cover up.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since 2016, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the 38-year-old de facto Saudi ruler, has significantly loosened many of those restrictions as he oversees a plan to remake the country\u2019s economy. Women are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/women-are-getting-more-jobs-than-ever-in-changing-saudi-arabia-1.1609082\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pouring into<\/a> the workplace in record numbers, and the gender segregation and strict dress codes that shaped public life are gradually <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaararabia.com\/fashion\/fashion-now\/red-sea-film-festival-best-dressed\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dissolving<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saudi women say that it has become easier to divorce and obtain custody of their children. Although they still need the approval of a male guardian to marry, a requirement across many Arab countries, some women have successfully appealed to judges to override their guardian\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Nevertheless, in a World Economic Forum <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/publications\/global-gender-gap-report-2023\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> on the global gender gap last year, Saudi Arabia ranked 131 out of 146 countries. By law, the kingdom\u2019s ruler must be a male member of the royal family. While several <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/features\/2023\/01\/04\/Saudi-Arabia-s-female-ambassadors-Who-are-the-five-women-representing-the-Kingdom-\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">women<\/a> have ascended to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arabnews.com\/node\/2116446\/saudi-arabia\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">high-ranking positions<\/a>, all of Prince Mohammed\u2019s key cabinet members and closest advisers are men. Many female immigrants to the country, particularly domestic workers, face significant restrictions on their freedom of movement and other basic rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The crown prince has also overseen a sweeping <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/21\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-dissent-crackdown.html\" title=\"\">crackdown on domestic dissent<\/a>, arresting hundreds of Saudis across the political spectrum, including many of the country\u2019s most prominent women\u2019s rights activists and several women who criticized government policies <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uscirf.gov\/manahel-al-otaibi\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">on social media<\/a>. Loujain al-Hathloul, an activist who campaigned against the driving ban, was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/25\/world\/middleeast\/saudi-arabia-loujain-al-hathloul.html\" title=\"\">imprisoned<\/a> from 2018 until 2021 and remains barred from traveling abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cA country that jails women simply because they advocate for their rights has no business being the face of the U.N.\u2019s top forum for women\u2019s rights and gender equality,\u201d Louis Charbonneau, a director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement on Wednesday. \u201cSaudi authorities should demonstrate that this honor was not completely undeserved and immediately release all detained women\u2019s rights defenders, end male guardianship and ensure women\u2019s full rights to equality with men.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Saudi government did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Saudi women \u201chave been granted the means of empowerment and become an active partner in the nation\u2019s development and elevation,\u201d the kingdom\u2019s state news agency said in its report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2022, Iran was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/14\/world\/middleeast\/iran-un-womens-rights-vote.html\" title=\"\">removed from<\/a> the same U.N. commission in a U.S.-led vote that came months into Tehran\u2019s crackdown on uprisings driven by women and young people who have been demanding an end to the Islamic Republic\u2019s rule.
