Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday stressed the virtues of boosting the water economy<\/a> in the country, underlining that it leads to more job creation, improving the health of the people and contributing to ease of living. He said water and nature conservation is a part of Indian consciousness and his government is working with a whole of society approach on this front.<\/p>\n

In a virtual address to the \u201cJal Sanchay, Jan Bhagidari\u201d program in Surat, the prime minister maintained that 15 crore families are getting tap water now due to the government\u2019s efforts in the last decade. Water conservation<\/a>, he said, is not just a policy for his dispensation but a commitment and responsibility.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater will be the first parameter on which our future generations will assess us,\u201d Modi said, adding that it is not just a resource but an aspect on which the life of people and their future depends. Water conservation is foremost among the 9 resolutions towards a sustainable future.<\/p>\n

He underlined the significance of water economy for growth and well-being of people.<\/p>\n

\u201cA huge water economy is linked with availability of clean water & success of water conservation,\u201d Modi said, adding that it has provided employment as well as self-employment opportunities to lakhs of people like engineers, plumbers, electricians and managers.<\/p>\n

As per WHO estimates, about 5.5 crore human hours of Indian citizens will be saved by providing piped water to every home. This initiative would save the time and efforts of women. Modi pointed out that health was also an important aspect of the water economy and untimely deaths of more than 1.25 lakh children can be prevented, more than 4 lakh people can be saved from diseases like diarrhoea every year by Jal Jeevan Mission<\/a>, which would lead to a significant reduction in expenditure.Hailing the growth in public participation in this endeavour, the prime minister said since only four percent of the freshwater in the world is present in India, large geographical regions in the country are deprived of water and the water table has receded in several places. Water scarcity along with climate change has had a major impact on the lives of the people.\u201cWater and environment conservation<\/a> is part of India\u2019s traditional consciousness\u2026 The people of India belong to a culture that considers water as a form of God, rivers as Goddesses and Sarovars as the abode of the Gods,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater conservation is not just a matter of policies but also social commitment\u2026 Our government has worked with a Whole of Society and Whole of Government approach,\u201d Modi said, adding that his government formed a dedicated Jal Shakti ministry<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Tap water connection was available in only three crore households around 2014 but has crossed 15 crore today, thanks to the Jal-Jeevan Mission. Jal samitis, in which 50% members are women, have done commendable work in this.<\/p>\n

More than 60 thousand Amrit Sarovars have been constructed in the country today while the Atal Bhujal Yojana has helped in recharging ground water. Similarly, \u2018Catch the Rain\u2019 campaign started in 2021 has a large number of stakeholders today while the \u2018Namami Gange\u2019 initiative has seen an emotional connection of citizens where they gave up old traditions and irrelevant customs to ensure the cleanliness of rivers.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister called for urgent action on water conservation and emphasized the need to adopt the mantra of \u2018Reduce, Reuse, Recharge, and Recycle\u2019 to secure the nation\u2019s future regarding water-related issues. He stated that water can only be saved when its misuse ends, consumption is reduced, water is reused, water sources are recharged and contaminated water is recycled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI believe that together, we will make India a beacon of water conservation for all of humanity,\u201d he said, extending his best wishes for the continued success of the mission.
