{"id":13005,"date":"2024-03-29T09:24:14","date_gmt":"2024-03-29T09:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/29\/the-highs-and-lows-of-humza-yousafs-first-year-in-bute-house\/"},"modified":"2024-03-29T09:24:14","modified_gmt":"2024-03-29T09:24:14","slug":"the-highs-and-lows-of-humza-yousafs-first-year-in-bute-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/news.talkwithrattan.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/29\/the-highs-and-lows-of-humza-yousafs-first-year-in-bute-house\/","title":{"rendered":"The highs and lows of Humza Yousaf&#8217;s first year in Bute House"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align:center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/03\/768x432\/skynews-humza-yousaf-first-minister_6503490.jpg?20240328163253&amp;fit=768,432&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-post-thumbnail size-post-thumbnail wp-post-image\" alt=\"The highs and lows of Humza Yousaf&#8217;s first year in Bute House\" title=\"The highs and lows of Humza Yousaf&#8217;s first year in Bute House\" \/><\/div><p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component-name=\"sdc-article-body\" data-highlight-intro=\"true\">\n<p>It has been a rollercoaster 12 months for Humza Yousaf as he marks one year as Scotland&#8217;s first minister.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Yousaf has celebrated the highs of his promised council tax freeze and weathered the lows of his predecessor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/nicola-sturgeon-5937\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nicola Sturgeon<\/a><\/strong> being arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Yousaf was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/humza-yousaf-sworn-in-as-scotlands-first-minister-at-court-of-session-in-edinburgh-12844721\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sworn into office<\/a><\/strong> on 29 March 2023 after a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/snp-leadership-hopeful-humza-yousaf-skipped-key-vote-on-gay-marriage-due-to-religious-pressure-says-scotlands-former-first-minister-alex-salmond-12823551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bruising contest<\/a><\/strong> to succeed Ms Sturgeon, who surprised the country with her <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/scotlands-first-minister-nicola-sturgeon-is-to-resign-12811532\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shock resignation<\/a><\/strong> as first minister and SNP leader.<\/p>\n<p>He became Scotland&#8217;s youngest ever first minister, and the first from an ethnic minority background to hold the post.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"ui-media-caption\">\n        <span class=\"u-hide-visually\">Image:<\/span><br \/>\n        <span class=\"ui-media-caption__caption-text\">Pic: PA<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Now a year on, Mr Yousaf says the role continues to be the &#8220;greatest honour&#8221; of his life but accepts that &#8220;there&#8217;s still a lot more to do to deliver for the people of Scotland&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Yousaf said: &#8220;I am honoured every day to lead a government driven by clear values, and I am absolutely committed to continuing to make Scotland a better place to live, work and study for everyone who makes it their home.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to Sky News, Mr Yousaf said going forward he will continue to campaign for Scottish independence and will seek a Section 30 Order to hold a second referendum if Sir Keir Starmer is elected prime minister at the next general election.<\/p>\n<p>He said, &#8220;notwithstanding&#8221; He claimed the Scottish government&#8217;s policies will keep 100,000 children out of relative poverty and 70,000 out of absolute poverty in 2024-25, according to recently published analysis<br \/>\u2022 He said the national council tax freeze would protect households amid the cost of living crisis.<br \/>\u2022 The first minister said a record \u00a319.5bn has been invested into Scotland&#8217;s NHS &#8211; without losing a single day to pay-related strike action.<br \/>\u2022 He added that a record number of junior doctors are joining the country&#8217;s NHS.<br \/>\u2022 Mr Yousaf stated that Scotland led every other nation and region last month for private sector employment growth.<br \/>\u2022 The first minister noted that record numbers of school leavers are going on to a &#8220;positive destination&#8221;. This includes a record high number of young Scots from deprived areas applying to study at university.<br \/>\u2022 He stated that Scotland&#8217;s GDP per head has grown at a faster rate than the UK average.<br \/>\u2022 Mr Yousaf also said his government has pledged up to \u00a3500m to support the offshore wind industry to help create thousands of green jobs.<br \/>\u2022 And also worth celebrating, the first minister is expecting a child this July with wife Nadia El-Nakla. Pic: PA<br \/>\n        <\/span><br \/>\n      <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2022 The Scottish government&#8217;s bottle deposit return scheme was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/deposit-return-scheme-scotlands-controversial-recycling-initiative-delayed-until-at-least-october-2025-12897326\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">delayed until at least October 2025<\/a><\/strong> after Westminster rejected an application for an exemption to the Internal Market Act &#8211; effectively blocking glass from the scheme. Circularity Scotland, the company tasked with overseeing the scheme, later folded with \u00a386m in debts. Veteran SNP MSP Fergus Ewing was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/suspension-of-snp-rebel-fergus-ewing-is-proportionate-says-minister-12971494\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suspended from the party&#8217;s Holyrood group<\/a><\/strong> for voting against government minister and Scottish Greens co-leader Lorna Slater in a confidence vote. Ms Slater, who was criticised over her handling of the scheme, survived the vote.<br \/>\u2022 It was a year of jumping ship with ex-SNP leadership rival Ash Regan MSP <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/former-snp-leadership-candidate-ash-regan-quits-to-become-alba-partys-first-msp-12994715\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leaving for the Alba Party<\/a><\/strong> and Dr Lisa Cameron MP <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/snp-mp-lisa-cameron-defects-to-conservatives-over-bullying-in-westminster-group-12982971\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defecting to the Tories<\/a><\/strong>. Angus MacNeil MP was expelled from the SNP following a row with the party&#8217;s chief whip at Westminster. Mr MacNeil refused to rejoin the group at the end of a suspension and was subsequently given the boot. The MP has vowed to stand as an independent candidate at the next general election.<br \/>\u2022 In December, the Scottish government announced it would take <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/gender-reform-bill-scottish-government-drops-legal-battle-against-westminster-13034820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no further legal action<\/a><\/strong> against Westminster&#8217;s veto of its controversial gender reform bill. It came after Scotland&#8217;s highest civil court <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/uk-government-blocking-scotlands-gender-reform-bill-was-lawful-court-rules-13025401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled that the UK government acted lawfully<\/a><\/strong> in blocking the bill from receiving royal assent. Westminster is now seeking reimbursement for the legal costs it incurred defending its decision.<br \/>\u2022 Michael Matheson was <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/michael-matheson-resigns-as-scottish-health-secretary-over-11-000-ipad-bill-13066647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced to quit as health secretary<\/a><\/strong> last month amid a probe into an \u00a311,000 iPad data roaming bill. Mr Matheson initially billed the taxpayer after claiming he ran up the eye-watering invoice undertaking constituency work during a family holiday in Morocco. After the story hit the headlines, it then emerged his teenage sons had used the iPad as a hotspot to watch football while abroad. The Falkirk West MSP was found to have <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/michael-matheson-breached-holyrood-rules-over-11-000-ipad-bill-inquiry-concludes-13094610\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">breached Holyrood&#8217;s code of conduct<\/a><\/strong> but has ignored calls to resign. of a first minister out of his depth and unable to control his feuding, scandal-ridden party.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Humza Yousaf has ignored the real priorities of Scots &#8211; fixing our ailing public services and growing the economy &#8211; and instead doubled down on the SNP&#8217;s fixation with breaking up the UK, while cosying up to the anti-growth Greens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Later this year voters will get the chance to cast their verdict on his and the SNP&#8217;s dire reign.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar described Mr Yousaf as a &#8220;weak leader who is out of his depth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Sarwar added: &#8220;Not only is it clear to the people of Scotland that Humza Yousaf has no vision for the future &#8211;
