Indian\u00a0news\u00a0agency\u00a0ANI\u00a0has sued\u00a0Netflix\u00a0Inc and producers of an\u00a0Indian\u00a0series about a plane\u00a0hijack, asking for four episodes to be taken down as they used\u00a0ANI\u00a0content\u00a0without permission,\u00a0ANI’s lawyer told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n

The series, called\u00a0IC-814: The Kandahar\u00a0Hijack<\/a>\u00a0– a fictionalised version of the 1999\u00a0hijacking of\u00a0Indian\u00a0Airlines flight 814 from Kathmandu – has been embroiled in controversy since\u00a0its\u00a0release last month.<\/p>\n

Social media users and members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have criticised the show for what they said was an incorrect portrayal of the\u00a0hijackers as Hindus with Hindu names when they were Muslims.<\/p>\n

Netflix<\/a>\u00a0added new disclaimers to the six-episode show last week after\u00a0its\u00a0officials were summoned by India’s information and broadcasting ministry. It also said the code names used in the series reflected those used during the actual event.<\/p>\n

“They have used copyright archival footage of\u00a0ANI\u00a0without license, they have also used the (ANI) trademark,” Sidhant Kumar, counsel for\u00a0ANI, said.<\/p>\n

“Since the series has come into such criticism, our trademark and brand name is being tarnished,” Kumar said, adding that\u00a0ANI\u00a0wants\u00a0Netflix\u00a0to take down four episodes where\u00a0its\u00a0content\u00a0has been used.<\/p>\n

The Delhi High Court had agreed to hear the case and sought the response of\u00a0Netflix, he said.<\/p>\n

There was no immediate response from\u00a0Netflix\u00a0for a request for comment from Reuters, which has a minority stake in\u00a0ANI.<\/p>\n

India blames Pakistan and Pakistan-based militant groups for the December 1999\u00a0hijack, which was resolved after New Delhi freed three Islamist militants, including Masood Azhar, the head of one such group.<\/p>\n
