Guwahati: Manipur police<\/a> on Sunday claimed that vehicles of police were fired upon from automatic rifles from among the protestors<\/a>. The state government has extended the suspension of internet and mobile data services<\/a> for five more days on five districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts.<\/p>\n

Police officials, including Ksh Shivakanta SP Imphal West; N Herojit DIG Range; K. Meghachandra SP Imphal East; and P. Achouba OC Commando, addressed the media regarding the escalating tension in the Kakwa area.<\/p>\n

There is unrest in which a lady was injured allegedly during the recent protest in Imphal.<\/p>\n

Shivakanta said, \u201cAutomatic burst rounds have been fired at my bulletproof vehicle. Miscreants, who are intermingling with the protesters, also targeted other vehicles,\u201d he said, emphasizing the growing danger posed by violent elements within the crowd. \u201cEarlier, the vehicles have been targeted with slings and stones but now they have been fired upon, my vehicle also got hit.\u201d<\/p>\n

The police department issued an appeal to civil society organizations<\/a> (CSOs) and the general public.<\/p>\n


The internet ban extension, effective from 3:00 PM on September 15, 2024, will last until 3:00 PM on September 20, 2024, as part of efforts to maintain public safety<\/a> amidst the prevailing law and order situation.The government had previously suspended mobile data and internet services, including Lease Lines, VSATs, Broadbands, and VPN services, in these areas starting on September 10. The extension comes following a review of the prevailing security conditions and concerns over the impact of internet services on the ongoing unrest.
However, this order will not affect the conditional lifting of the internet suspension<\/a> in other areas through broadband services, which was implemented under a separate directive dated September 12, 2024.<\/p>\n

Manipur authorities have issued strict instructions to all mobile service providers to ensure compliance with the extension and have also requested internet users to avoid activities that could lead to further disruptions.<\/p>\n

The extension was authorized by the Governor of Manipur, under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. The situation remains under review, and the government will reassess conditions before making further decisions.
