Multinational firm Ernst & Young Global Limited (EY) issued a statement on Wednesday, in response to a grieving mother’s letter, which accused the company for her untimely death. <\/p>\n

On 26-year-old Anna Sebastian<\/a>‘s death, EY claimed that the company was ‘ deeply saddened’, and extended its condolences to the family of the deceased. <\/p>\n

“We are deeply saddened by Anna Sebastian’s tragic and untimely passing in July 2024, and our deepest condolences go to the bereaved family<\/a>,” EY said in a statement on September 18. <\/p>\n

Amidst intense social media scrutiny and anger directed towards the company and its alleged toxic work culture, EY clarified that the firm provided all assistance to Anna’s family.<\/p>\n

“Anna was a part of the Audit team<\/a> at S R Batliboi<\/a>, a member firm of EY Global<\/a>, in Pune<\/a> for a brief period of four months, joining the firm on 18 March 2024. That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us. While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all the assistance as we always do in such times of distress and will continue to do so,” read the EY statement further.<\/p>\n


Anna Sebastian Perayil tragically passed away on July 20, four months after starting her role as a chartered accountant at EY. Her death garnered attention after a heartfelt letter from her mother, Anita Augustine, went viral. In the letter, Anita which criticised the company\u2019s culture. Addressed to EY India chairman Rajiv Memani, Anita cited “the workload, new environment, and long hours” as contributing factors to her daughter’s untimely death.<\/p>\n

In her poignant message, Anita described the company’s \u201ccallous attitude\u201d over those four months as a significant factor in Anna’s passing. <\/p>\n

Having joined EY in March, it was Anna’s first professional role, and her mother revealed that she was \u201cthrilled\u201d to embark on this new journey.<\/p>\n

Anita characterised Anna as a “fighter”, reflecting on her daughter\u2019s impressive academic record and dedication. <\/p>\n

She noted that Anna worked “tirelessly” to meet the high expectations at EY, striving to fulfill every demand placed upon her.<\/p>\n

Anna’s death has opened up the conversation on toxic work cultures across companies in India, with users voicing their anger over the faultlines in the corporate sector.
