In the latest move to curb the expansive reach of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, the US House of Representatives banned congressional staffers<\/a> from using Microsoft’s Copilot generative AI assistant. <\/p>\n

According to a report in Axios, the application is seen as a threat in terms of data leakage. \u201cThe Microsoft Copilot application has been deemed by the Office of Cybersecurity to be a risk to users due to the threat of leaking House data to non-House approved cloud services,\u201d said Catherine Szpindor, the House chief administrative officer.<\/p>\n

Policymakers in the US have been looking at potential risks in the adoption of AI tools<\/a> by federal agencies and the adequacy of safeguards to protect individual privacy and ensure fair treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe recognise government users have higher security requirements for data. That’s why we announced a roadmap of Microsoft AI tools, like Copilot, that meet federal government security and compliance requirements that we intend to deliver later this year,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Reuters.<\/p>\n

Last year, two senators from the Democratic and Republican parties introduced legislation to ban the use of AI that creates content falsely depicting candidates in political advertisements to influence federal elections. The US is set to go to polls later this year. <\/p>\n

Meanwhile, US vice president Kamala Harris said federal agencies must show that their artificial intelligence tools aren’t harming the public<\/a>, or stop using them. <\/p>\n

“When government agencies use AI tools, we will now require them to verify that those tools do not endanger the rights and safety of the American people,” she told reporters.<\/p>\n

Earlier, on Thursday, the White House said it is requiring federal agencies using AI to adopt \u201cconcrete safeguards\u201d by December 1<\/a> to protect Americans’ rights and ensure safety as the government expands AI use in a wide range of applications.<\/p>\n

Each agency must have a set of concrete safeguards that guide everything from facial recognition screenings at airports to AI tools that help control the electric grid or determine mortgages and home insurance.<\/p>\n

Thursday’s directive will also affect AI tools that government agencies have been using for years to help with decisions about immigration, housing, child welfare, and a range of other services.<\/p>\n

As an example, Harris said, “If the Veterans Administration wants to use AI in VA hospitals to help doctors diagnose patients, they would first have to demonstrate that AI does not produce racially biased diagnoses.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
