Modi is scheduled to be in the States till September 23, when he will address the UN Summit of the Future and subsequently leave for India. India’s foreign minister, however, is set to be in New York to deliver India’s national statement at the UNGA on September 28, and is expected to meet Hossain then. The Jaishankar-Hossain meet is likely to feature Sheikh Hasina heavily, with Dhaka wanting her extradited but being held up by a lot of paperwork to approach New Delhi with an official extradition request.

But, with local Bangladeshi politics playing a major role in Hasina’s extradition, her extended stay in India is unlikely to help the Modi government get its relationship with Dhaka back on track, TOI reports.

To make matters worse, tensions between the interim government and New Delhi have risen, due to what India has characterised as “unhelpful’’ remarks from a few top functionaries of the interim Yunus government, with the Nobel laureate himself in hot water over statements he made.

The chief advisor has twice said that reports of attacks on minorities have been exaggerated, telling India to not remain captivated by the “narrative that portrays every other political party except Awami League as Islamist” or that Bangladesh is safe only with Hasina – a long-time ally of the current Indian government – at the helm.

India is also wary of the interim government’s efforts to — as Hossain said in an interview this week — build a normal relationship with Pakistan after Hasina’s exit, with reports from Dhaka say the chief advisor is likely to participate in a bilateral meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in New York next week.
