Chandigarh: With just two days left for the implementation of 5% hike in water charges in the city, mayor Kuldeep Kumar on Friday shot off a letter to home-cum-local bodies secretary, UT, Nitin Kumar Yadav, urging him to stop the move.
The engineering department of the Chandigarh municipal corporation will implement the hike from April 1.
In the letter, which was also marked to MC commissioner Anindita Mitra, the mayor said the move will put an undue financial burden on the residents of the city.
Kumar wrote, \u201cThe MC house had passed a resolution to provide 20,000 litres of water for free to the residents of Chandigarh in its meeting held on March 11, which was a persistent demand of the general public. Keeping in view of the above, it is requested that 5% hike of water tariff w.e.f. April 1 may be stopped immediately and the resolution passed by the general house to provide free 20,000 litres of water to the residents be considered in public interest.\u201d
Notably, the move by the mayor has come at a time when Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator Banwarilal Purohit had already opposed the idea of supply of free water, citing financial issues for the MC. <\/p>\n
