Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra have been hit by heavy rains, leading the India Meteorological Department<\/a> (IMD) to issue a red alert<\/a> for Mumbai and surrounding areas. The alert remains in effect until September 26, with further downpours expected. In response, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation<\/a> (BMC) declared a holiday for schools and colleges across Mumbai and its suburbs. <\/p>\n

Deepak Kesarkar, Maharashtra\u2019s School Education Minister and the guardian minister for Mumbai, confirmed the closure, stating that the decision was made after the IMD predicted heavy rain.<\/p>\n

The IMD has also forecasted heavy rainfall<\/a> in Palghar<\/a> and Nashik<\/a> districts, alongside an orange alert for Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Raigad, Dhule, and Nandurbar for Thursday. The department’s forecast for the coming days warns of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across isolated areas in Maharashtra. <\/p>\n

According to the latest bulletin from the regional meteorological center, \u201cHeavy to very heavy rainfall & Thunderstorm with lightning & gusty winds at isolated places Very Likely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mumbai Rains: Waterlogging and Traffic Disruptions<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday, torrential rains across Mumbai caused severe waterlogging and traffic jams in various parts of the city. The heavy downpour particularly affected Kurla East, Nehru Nagar, and Chembur, with significant traffic congestion reported on the Kurla bridge. A landslide at the Mumbra bypass further compounded the situation, leading to a three-hour traffic jam. Authorities confirmed that no casualties occurred, and the road was cleared after JCB machinery was deployed. Fire officer Swapnil Sarnobat said, \u201cThe situation was brought under control by managing traffic from one side.\u201d

In Andheri\u2019s MIDC area, a 45-year-old woman, Vimal Gaikwad, drowned in an open drain during the heavy rains. Schools and Colleges to remain closed today<\/h2>\n

As the rains intensified, authorities in several districts, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Palghar, decided to close all schools and colleges on Thursday. The BMC urged residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. In Pune, District Collector Suhas Diwase announced a public holiday for all schools and colleges in Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad following the IMD’s orange alert. Thane Municipal Corporation and Palghar district administration issued similar directives, closing both public and private institutions.<\/p>\n

In addition to train disruptions, Mumbai Airport faced significant delays. A total of 14 flights were diverted to alternate airports due to poor weather conditions. Of these, nine IndiGo flights were redirected, along with two Vistara flights and one each from Air India, Akasa, and Gulf Air. The diverted flights landed in Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Mopa Airport in Goa, and Udaipur.<\/p>\n

IMD Weather Alert across India<\/h2>\n

Heavy rainfall has also hit parts of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Uttarakhand<\/a>. In Tamil Nadu, rains started late Wednesday, leaving several areas of Chennai waterlogged. Power outages were reported across the city, with traffic jams adding to the chaos. Nungambakkam received 7.42 cm of rain, while Meenambakkam recorded 7.12 cm. Other districts, including Tiruvallur, Vellore, and Cuddalore, also experienced downpours, as the IMD predicted light to moderate rainfall across North Tamil Nadu through the weekend.<\/p>\n

In Telangana, the IMD has warned of light to moderate rains across the state, with heavy rainfall expected in northern districts such as Adilabad, Nizamabad, and Kamareddy. Hyderabad IMD Director K Nagaratna explained, \u201cPresently, the weather situations indicate that yesterday’s low-pressure area over the west central bay and adjoining areas has become less marked this morning, and its associated cyclonic circulation today lies over south Chhattisgarh and its adjoining areas up to 5.8 km height.\u201d<\/p>\n

Uttarakhand, too, is on high alert as the IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall from September 25 to 27. The state has experienced frequent landslides, particularly along the Badrinath National Highway, causing road blockages. Earlier this month, heavy rainfall led to landslides at several points, including Lambagad, Nandprayag, and Sonala, disrupting traffic in the region. <\/p>\n

The Chamoli Police have been managing the situation and updating travellers about blocked and reopened routes via social media. In a statement, Chamoli Police said, \u201cDue to the heavy rainfall in the district, landslides are occurring at many places on the Badrinath National Highway, due to which the road is getting blocked repeatedly.\u201d
