The government has taken action to block several websites that were found to be exposing sensitive personal information, such as Aadhaar<\/a> and PAN<\/a> card details of Indian citizens, according to an official statement released on Thursday. This decision followed the identification of security vulnerabilities by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In<\/a>), which operates under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.<\/p>\n

“It has come to the notice of the MeitY<\/a> that some websites were exposing sensitive personal identifiable information, including Aadhaar and PAN Card details of Indian citizens. This has been taken up seriously as the Government accords the highest priority to safe cyber security<\/a> practices and the protection of personal data. In line with this, prompt action has been taken to block these websites,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI<\/a>) has filed a complaint with the relevant police authorities regarding the violation of the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, which prohibits the public display of Aadhaar information.<\/p>\n

“The analysis of these websites by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has shown some security flaws in these websites. The concerned website owners have been provided guidance about the actions to be taken at their end for hardening the ICT infrastructures and fixing the vulnerabilities,” the statement said.<\/p>\n

MeitY Prioritises Cyber Security and Data Protection<\/h2>\n

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has introduced the Information Technology (Reasonable Security Practices and Procedures and Sensitive Personal Data or Information) Rules, 2011, which mandate the non-publication and non-disclosure of sensitive personal information. According to these rules, any individual adversely affected by the exposure of personal data can file a complaint and seek compensation through the Adjudicating Officer of the IT Act<\/a>, with state IT secretaries empowered to serve in this role.

MeitY also highlighted that the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, has already been enacted, and the accompanying rules are in the final stages of drafting. However, the official statement did not disclose the names or the number of websites blocked. Despite government action, a simple search revealed that several websites were still exposing sensitive personal details, such as Aadhaar, PAN card, and driving licence information of citizens.Data leaks like these leave individuals vulnerable to online scams. Last week, a cybersecurity researcher claimed that Star Health Insurance<\/a> officials sold the data of 3.1 crore customers. The hacker allegedly created Telegram bots to access 31,216,953 customer records updated until July 2024, along with 5,758,425 claims available through early August.In a video, the email ID of a senior Star Health official was revealed, showing a negotiation between the hacker, identified as xenZen, and the official. Initially, the deal was settled for USD 28,000, but the official later demanded USD 1,50,000, citing that a portion of the payment had to be shared with senior management to keep the data breach ongoing.Star Health Insurance has since filed a lawsuit against the hacker, Telegram, and other involved parties.<\/p>\n
