Parliament’s standing committees were officially established on Thursday, with crucial appointments announced for several key panels.<\/p>\n

BJP’s Bhartruhari Mahtab<\/a> has been named chair of the Finance Committee<\/a>, while Congress<\/a>‘ Shashi Tharoor<\/a> will lead the External Affairs Committee<\/a>. <\/p>\n

These department-related standing committees, which include representatives from various political parties, function as mini parliaments and oversee the operations of different ministries.<\/p>\n

The Rajya Sabha<\/a> Secretariat issued a communique announcing the formation of these committees.<\/p>\n

In addition to the Finance and External Affairs panels, the Defence Committee<\/a> will be chaired by former Union Minister Radha Mohan Singh, and the Home Affairs Committee<\/a> will be led by BJP member Radha Mohan Das Agrawal. <\/p>\n


Notably, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi<\/a>, is a member of the Defence Committee, although UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi does not appear on any of the committees.Major BJP allies, including the TDP and Janata Dal (United), along with partners in the upcoming Maharashtra elections, the Shiv Sena and NCP, will each chair one committee. NCP’s lone Lok Sabha member, Sunil Tatkare, will head the Petroleum and Natural Gas Committee, while Shiv Sena’s Shrirang Appa Barne will lead the Energy Committee.Additionally, JD(U)’s Sanjay Jha has been appointed chair of the Transport, Tourism, and Culture Committee, and TDP’s Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy will oversee the Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.<\/p>\n

Congress members Charanjit Singh Channi and Saptagiri Ulaka will chair the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Food Processing Committee and the Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Committee, respectively.<\/p>\n

From the DMK, Tiruchi Siva and K. Kanimozhi will lead the Industry Committee and the Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution Committee, respectively. Former Union Ministers Anurag Thakur and Rajiv Pratap Rudy have been assigned to chair the Coal, Mines, and Steel Committee and the Water Resources Committee, respectively.<\/p>\n

BJP member Nishikant Dubey will head the Communications and Information Technology Committee. It is noteworthy that Dubey previously had a contentious relationship with Tharoor, who chaired the IT Committee until his replacement in 2022.
