One of the widest hurricanes on record slammed into Florida\u2019s Gulf Coast on September 26 as a powerful Category 4 storm, inundating Florida\u2019s coast with meters-high storm surge and sending tropical storm\u2013force winds as far as 500 kilometers from its eye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helene \u2014 like so many hurricanes in recent years \u2014 seemed to spin up out of nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just three days earlier, it was a disorganized cluster of thunderstorms off the eastern coast of Mexico\u2019s Yucat\u00e1n Peninsula. A mere \u201ctropical disturbance,\u201d it was dubbed PTC9 for tracking purposes. But on September 24, the U.S. National Hurricane Center released a startling forecast for PTC9.<\/p>\n\n\n
