The Supreme Court<\/a> will hear the suo moto case on Monday concerning the rape and murder<\/a> of a junior doctor at Kolkata\u2019s state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital<\/a>, an incident that took place last month.<\/p>\n

According to the causelist published on the Supreme Court\u2019s website, a three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud<\/a> will resume the hearing on September 30.<\/p>\n

The West Bengal<\/a> Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) has announced that it will decide whether to continue with its ‘cease work’ protest following the outcome of the Supreme Court hearing. This decision follows an attack on three doctors and three nurses at Sagore Dutta Hospital<\/a> in North 24 Parganas after a patient’s death on Friday night. Medical students at Sagore Dutta Hospital have already launched a ‘cease work’ protest in response to the assault.<\/p>\n

Junior doctor Aniket Mahato shared, “We have called for a cease work following the SC hearing, but it will depend on the court\u2019s order. The government must provide us with basic facilities.”<\/p>\n

Another doctor, Debasish Halder, added, “We are prepared to resume our cease work and stage an even stronger protest.”<\/p>\n


A protesting doctor at Sagore Dutta Hospital remarked, “Security personnel were present but did nothing. There needs to be a proper SoP in place.”A WBJDF representative further expressed frustration, stating, “The state government has failed to ensure our safety and security, which led to the attack at Sagore Dutta Hospital.”Earlier, a torchlight procession was held from Sagore Dutta Hospital in Sodepur to Dunlop in North 24 Parganas, with demonstrators demanding justice for the R.G. Kar Hospital victim and safety measures for medical staff. Similar rallies with torches and candles were organised across the state, including at R.G. Kar Hospital, Sagore Dutta Hospital, SSKM, Calcutta University, Jadavpur University, and Bankura, with local residents joining the protests.<\/p>\n

The torch procession began from Sagore Dutta Hospital on Sunday evening and continued to Dunlop, signalling widespread unrest among medical professionals and the public alike.<\/p>\n
