Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty<\/a> has been conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award<\/a>, country\u2019s highest recognition in the field of cinema.<\/p>\n

This was announced by Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on X earlier today. \u201cMithun Da\u2019s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vaishnaw wrote that the award will be presented to Mithun Chakraborty at the 70th National Film Awards<\/a> ceremony, set to take place on Oct 8, 2024.<\/p>\n

After the announcement, Chakraborty said, \u201cFrom a boy from a narrow alley in Kolkata<\/a>, journey to receiving this award, I am really overwhelmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congratulating the actor and BJP<\/a> leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the actor is a “cultural icon” admired across generations. “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” Modi wrote on X.<\/p>\n


Responding to the announcement, veteran dancer and actor Mamata Banerjee<\/a> said, \u201cI have known him for decades. I know how he felt when he was not getting films after \u2018Mrigaya\u2019. I am feeling so happy that I feel like I have received the award.\u201dDirector and actor Aparna Sen<\/a> also congratulated Chakraborty and said, \u201cMithun has received the award at an early age. May he do much more good work in the future.\u201dThe news of Chakraborty getting the Dadasaheb Phalke Award comes just months after he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Chakraborty made his acting debut in 1977 and became one of the few actors who won a National Award with his debut film \u2018Mrigayaa\u2019. The actor became famous after his 1982 \u2018Disco Dancer\u2019. Since then he has acted in numerous films, including Agneepath, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye, Hum Se Hai Zamana, Pasand Apni Apni, Ghar Ek Mandir and Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, among many others. In recent years, he was seen in films like \u2018OMG: Oh My God\u2019.<\/p>\n

A former Rajya Sabha MP, Chakraborty joined the BJP ahead of the 2021 West Bengal legislative assembly elections.
