MUMBAI: IL&FS outgoing chairman CS Rajan has likened the collapse of the infrastructure conglomerate to the sinking of the Titanic and has said that the resolution process will serve as the foundation for future bankruptcy laws. Rajan\u2019s term as non-executive chairman of IL&FS ended today, marking the end of a six-year tenure on the board following corporate India\u2019s largest financial crises.
Nand Kishore<\/a>, the current managing director, will take over as chairman and managing director from Oct 1.
In the six years that followed the collapse, 188 of the 302 entities under IL&FS were resolved, with remaining cases either in court or servicing debt. Kishore expressed confidence in resolving the remaining debt and entities. \u201cThe board is confident of expeditiously resolving the balance debt as well as the remaining entities within the approved resolution framework,\u201d he said.
Rajan, who was part of the original government constituted board for IL&FS after the group\u2019s failure in 2018, said \u201cThe collapse was akin to the sinking of the Titanic.. the task of salvage and retrieval of valuable assets was given to a public interest board appointed by the Govt and the NCLT\u201d. So far the Govt appointed board has resolved Rs 55,000 crore of debt, approximately 90% of the targeted Rs 61,000 crore.
\u201cIt has become evident that stakeholders\u2014rating agencies, auditors, shareholders, regulators and board of directors\u2014must play a vigilant role in keeping corporations, particularly conglomerates like IL&FS, on track. It is important that we focus on the speed and delivery of the legal system,\u201d said Rajan. IL&FS\u2019s debt resolution target remains the highest under IBC to date.
The new chairman Kishore, a former deputy comptroller and auditor general, joined IL&FS in 2018 and became managing director in 2022. He will now lead the company\u2019s efforts to complete the remaining resolution tasks.<\/div>\n
