West Bengal correctional homes<\/a> have decided to serve special meals during Durga Puja<\/a> festivities, from October 9 to October 12, to ensure inmates feel included in the celebrations, an official said on Saturday. <\/p>\n

The festive menu will include dishes like mutton biryani<\/a>, ‘basanti pulao’, and other Bengali cuisines for both convicts and undertrials. An official stated, “We get requests from inmates for better food during every festival. We have got a new menu this year and are hopeful that this will bring smiles to their faces. I personally consider this as a very positive move to reform them.”<\/p>\n

Inmates working as cooks will prepare the delicacies, which will include ‘Macher matha diye pui shak’ (Malabar spinach with fish head), ‘macher matha diye dal’ (dal with fish head), ‘luchi-cholar dal’ (puri and Bengali chana dal), ‘payesh’ (Bengali porridge), chicken curry, ‘alu potol chingri’ (shrimp with pointed gourd and potato), mutton biryani with ‘raita’ (mixed curd), and ‘basanti pulao’ (yellow pulao).<\/p>\n

The official noted that non-vegetarian food will not be served to everyone, respecting the religious sentiments of the inmates, and prisoners will be allowed to choose their preferred items. He explained, “We want to bring changes in their routine, a break from their daily lives.”<\/p>\n

Presidency Jail, which houses former state ministers Partha Chatterjee and Jyoti Priya Mallick, and ex-principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, is among the correctional homes implementing this change. <\/p>\n


Chatterjee and Mallick are accused of involvement in recruitment scams and irregularities in the public distribution system, respectively, while Ghosh faces charges related to a rape-murder case and a financial scam.Currently, 26,994 men and 1,778 women are lodged in 59 correctional homes across the state. Another official mentioned, “For every major event, we seek to make special arrangements for the inmates.” The menu change during the festive season will apply to all correctional homes in the state.<\/p>\n
