This hairball, known as a trichobezoar, caused her severe stomach pain, prompting her to seek medical help.

Understanding Trichophagia

The woman had secretly battled trichophagia, which often occurs alongside trichotillomania—a mental disorder characterised by the urge to pull out one’s hair, according to the TOI report. Over the years, the hair she ingested accumulated in her stomach, forming a hard mass. Despite experiencing stomach pain for five years, she remained unaware of the cause.

Diagnosis and treatment

After consulting multiple doctors over the years without a diagnosis, the woman finally visited a district hospital in Bareilly in September. A CT scan revealed the shocking presence of a two-kilogram hairball in her stomach, surprising both her family and the medical staff, reported TOI.

A team of skilled doctors performed a critical surgery to remove the hairball successfully. Following the procedure, the woman was discharged in good health. TOI further reported that the woman’s medical team stressed the need for post-surgery counselling, as trichophagia is a psychological condition that requires ongoing management to prevent recurrence.

Ongoing support and treatment

The TOI report noted that the young woman will continue to receive counselling to address her hair-eating disorder. This case underscores the importance of early diagnosis and mental health care, as trichophagia can often go unnoticed for years, as seen in her case. With appropriate treatment, she can now look forward to a healthier future.

Can Trichophagia be cured?

Yes, trichophagia can be treated, but it typically requires a combination of therapies due to its mental health implications. This syndrome is often associated with trichotillomania, an obsessive-compulsive hair-pulling disorder. Effective treatments address both the behavioural and emotional aspects of the condition.

Source link

A startling medical case has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly where doctors successfully extracted a two-kilogram hairball from the stomach of a 21-year-old woman, reported TOI.
