picture shining a light on the underwater world of a tadpole species has earned him the title of Wildlife Photographer Of The Year.<\/p>\n<p>Shane Gross, from Canada, captured the western toad tadpoles while snorkelling through lily pads in Cedar Lake on Vancouver Island, British Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>He managed to snap a cloud of the amphibians, which are a near-threatened species due to habitat destruction and predators, while avoiding the visibility-reducing layers of silt and algae covering the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>Titled <strong>The Swarm Of Life<\/strong>, the photograph has been crowned the winner of the Natural History Museum&#8217;s prestigious <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/topic\/wildlife-photographer-of-the-year-10381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Wildlife Photographer Of The Year<\/strong><\/a> 2024 competition out of a record-breaking 59,228 entries, from 117 countries and territories.<\/p>\n<p>Kathy Moran, chair of the jury, said they were &#8220;captivated by the mix of light, energy and connectivity between the environment and the tadpoles&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This is the first time the species has been featured in the competition, which is now in its 60th year, she added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life Under Dead Wood<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"4\/3\"><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Alexis Tinker-Tsavalas, from Germany, was awarded the title of Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year, for an up-close image featuring slime mould on the right, and a macroscopic animal called a springtail on the left, taken in Berlin.<\/p>\n<p>Tinker-Tsavalas used a technique called focus stacking, combining 36 images with different areas of focus together.<\/p>\n<p>Judges said it showed great skill and &#8220;incredible attention to detail, patience and perseverance&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the competition, impact awards for both adult and young photographers were introduced this year, recognising conservation success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Recording By Hand<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"4\/3\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x576\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/768x576\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710465.jpg?20241008143945\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/380x285\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710465.jpg?20241008143945 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/768x576\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710465.jpg?20241008143945 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/1600x1200\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710465.jpg?20241008143945 1024w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" alt=\"Liwia Paw\u0142owska watches as a relaxed common whitethroat is gently held by abird ringer.Liwia is fascinated by bird ringing, and has been photographing ringing sessionssince she was nine. \"\/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The young impact award was given to Liwia Paw\u0142owska, from Poland, for her image of a common whitethroat taken during a bird ringing, a technique that records length, sex, condition and age to help scientists monitor populations and track migration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hope For The Ninu<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"4\/3\">\n        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" loading=\"lazy\" intrinsicsize=\"768x576\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/768x576\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710143.jpg?20241008153529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/380x285\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710143.jpg?20241008153529 380w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/768x576\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710143.jpg?20241008153529 760w, https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/24\/10\/1600x1200\/skynews-wildlife-photographer_6710143.jpg?20241008153529 1024w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 1024px) 1024px, 100vw\" alt=\"Hope for the Ninu &#13;&#10;Pic: Jannico Kelk\/Wildlife Photographer of the Year \"\/>\n    <\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In the adult category, Australian photographer Jannico Kelk picked up the prize for a picture of a greater bilby, a small marsupial also referred to as the ninu, which was one near extinction due to predators such as foxes and cats.
