US-headquartered Meta<\/a>, the parent company of Facebook<\/a>, WhatsApp<\/a> and Instagram<\/a>, announced on Monday that it is expanding its third-party fact-checking<\/a> programme in India<\/a> to include news agency Press Trust of India (PTI) as a dedicated fact-checking unit within the newswire\u2019s editorial department.<\/p>\n

The partnership will enable PTI to identify, review and rate content as misinformation<\/a> across Meta platforms.<\/p>\n

To prevent the spread of misinformation and provide its users with more reliable information, Meta partners with independent third-party fact-checkers that are certified through the non-partisan International Fact-Checking Network and identify, review and rate viral misinformation across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.<\/p>\n

Globally, the company has built one of the largest independent fact-checking networks, with nearly 100 partners around the world to review and rate viral misinformation in more than 60 languages.<\/p>\n

With the partnership with the PTI, Meta now has 12 fact-checking partners in India, the highest it has in any country, the company said in a statement.<\/p>\n

It covers 16 Indian languages through existing fact-checking partners \u2013 Bengali, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Punjabi, Assamese, Manipuri\/ Meitei, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Kashmiri, Bhojpuri, Oriya and Nepali \u2013 besides English.<\/p>\n

Each time a fact-checker rates a piece of content as false, altered or partly false, Meta reduces its distribution so that fewer people see it.It notifies people who try to share the content \u2013 or who previously shared it \u2013 that the information was rated by a fact-checker, and adds a warning label that links to the fact-checker\u2019s article with more information about the claim.<\/p>\n

Since 2016, Meta\u2019s fact-checking programme has expanded to include nearly 100 organisations globally.<\/p>\n

The focus of the programme is to address viral misinformation, particularly clear hoaxes that have no basis in fact, according to the company. Fact-checking partners prioritise provably false claims that are timely, trending and consequential, it said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
