Kolkata: The Indian Medical Association<\/a> (IMA) on Thursday, in a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee<\/a>, urged her to resolve the issues of junior doctors, who are on fast-unto death in Kolkata from Saturday, and expressing concern over the health condition of the junior doctors. Condition of Aniket Mahato, one of the seven junior doctors on fast-unto-death in Kolkata, is critical. He has been hospitalized in RG Kar Medical College<\/a> & hospital Thursday midnight after his medical conditions deteriorated drastically. A mega rally has been called today by the West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front<\/a> (WBJDF) at Esplanade. <\/p>\n

In a letter to Banerjee, the IMA said it has been almost a week since the young doctors started the hunger strike<\/a> and they deserve her \u201cimmediate attention\u201d. IMA said a safe working environment is a prerequisite.<\/p>\n

Mahato is in the Critical Care Unit (CCU) and his condition is critical. “We cannot call him stable. Aniket is critical and he is not stable. Urine Ketone levels are 4 Plus and he had a blood pressure problem. There was acute dehydration and stomach ache. We are giving them drip,” a CCU doctor of RG Kar Medical said. A medical board has been formed for his treatment.<\/p>\n

“One after another our co-fighter doctors’ conditions are deteriorating and the West Bengal government<\/a> is responsible for this,” a junior doctor at the Esplanade sit-in demonstration said.<\/p>\n

The junior doctors blamed the state government for the health condition of Mahato. “Today after 130 hours of fasting, our co-fighter has been admitted to the ICU. People put their lives at stake and protest when there are no other roads open. The government should take responsibility for this. We had hoped to get a written directive from the meeting with the Chief Secretary. But it remained unresolved,” Debaish Halder, a member of WBJDF said.<\/p>\n


WBJDF is protesting the PGT doctor’s rape and murder of R.G, Kar Medical College & Hospital at Esplanade. Mahato\u2019s health conditions started deteriorating on Thursday morning.
The fast-unto-death death agitation was started initially by six junior doctors from different medical colleges and hospitals from Saturday evening. Mahato has joined the hunger-strike since Sunday evening. Two more doctors of North Bengal Medical College & Hospital are also on fast-unto death. <\/p>\n

Subrana Goswami, a senior doctor who led the doctors\u2019 movement on this issue, said, “It will be unfortunate if the state government does not consider the demand of the junior doctors with empathy. The medical conditions of the other six junior doctors who are on hunger-strike are critical. It is high time that the state government considers their demands with empathy,\u201d Goswami said.
