The Mumbai police<\/a> on Sunday while seeking the custody of the alleged shooters of former Maharashtra minister and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) leader, Baba Siddique told the court that their probe indicates the murder to be a case of contract killing<\/a> with the accused even possibly conducting reconnaissance before carrying out the asisnation on Saturday night, sources in the know told ET.<\/p>\n

Hinting at the possible involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang<\/a>, in a late night development, the city police arrested Pravin Lonkar, the brother of Shubham from Pune. According to the police the Lonkar brothers hatched the conspiracy to kill Siddhique at their shop in Pune. Earlier in the day Shubham Lonkar<\/a> calling himself an alleged member of the Bishnoi gang had claimed responsibility for the murder. <\/p>\n

Sources told ET, they Lonkar is a mid-level operative of the Bishnoi gang and has spoken to Bishnoi in the past.<\/p>\n

Mumbai Police sources told ET that they haven’t ruled out the possibility of the assailants trying to carry out the shootout earlier but could have developed cold feet owing to the police cover that Siddique had. The NCP leader<\/a> was provided a non-categorised security and was allotted three police constables who worked in three shifts. At the time of the incident, one policeman was accompanying Siddique, who nabbed the accused and is the complainant in the case. <\/p>\n

According to the police, on Saturday, between 9:15-9:30 pm, Siddique was leaving his son\u2019s office and heading toward his residence in Bandra (West), Mumbai, when the the accused, Shivkumar Gautam opened fire firing six rounds. Two of the bullets allegedly pierced his chest leading to him collapsing on the ground. Siddique was immediately rushed to Lilavati Hospital<\/a> but was declared dead by the doctors at 10:30 pm. <\/p>\n


Police has identified the other accused as Gurmail Baljit Singh (23), a resident of Haryana, and an alleged associate who claimed to be a minor, a resident of UP. The third shooter has been identified as Shivkumar Gautam (24) who managed to flee the spot. Another accused, Mohammed Akhtar, who took the contract too is on a run. On Sunday, the two arrested accused were produced before a local court for want of custody. The court granted Singh’s custody until October 21 and asked to conduct an ossification test on the other accused who claimed that he is a minor. The police, however, contested that he is 19 years-old as per his Aadhar records.The probe has revealed that the accused had allegedly rented an apartment in Kurla and were living on rent since September, sources added. They allegedly received the firearms from a human courier a fortnight before the incident.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile Shivkumar managed to flee, the other two were nabbed by the constable on duty. The suspects were handed over to the Mumbai crime branch which has been entrusted with the probe. Their preliminary interrogation has revealed that they promised two lakhs each before the shootout bid and were promised a handsome award post the hit job,\u201d said a senior official requesting anonymity.<\/p>\n

The police is working on multiple leads, including the shootout to be a fallout of a SRA dispute or the possible involvement of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang owing to Siddique\u2019s proximity to Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who has been on the gang\u2019s target for a while now.<\/p>\n

The probe has revealed that the shooters had come into contact with a member of the Bishnoi gang inside a Haryana jail, following which they were given a contract to kill Siddique. The Bishoni gang is also suspected in getting accused Singh out of bail who was arreested in another murder case and was lodged at a jail in Haryana.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Mumbai police had booked Siddique\u2019s son Zeeshan Siddhique and seven others for allegedly obstructing Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) officials from carrying out a survey in a slum pocket in Bandra east. Zeeshan is an MLA from the Congress party and represents the Bandra East assembly constituency in Mumbai. The SRA officials were conducting a survey in the Dnyaneshwar Nagar area when Zeeshan allegedly landed up along with his supporters and obstructed the officials from doing their work, the police had said then.
