Bengaluru<\/a>: Deputy CM DK Shivakumar has asked corporates and industries including technology companies to celebrate the Kannada Rajyotsava<\/a> on November 1, along with cultural programmes. The state is celebrating the golden jubilee year since it was rechristened Karnataka on November 1, 1973.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe upcoming Rajyotsava Day is a special one for us as it culminates in the year-long golden jubilee celebrations of our state after its renaming as Karnataka,\u201d Kannada<\/a> & Culture Minister Shivaraj Tangadagi<\/a> told ET.<\/p>\n

Half of Bengaluru, according to Shivakumar, consists of people from outside the state, and hence there was a need to help them learn Kannada. “IT\/BT companies must hoist the Kannada flag and celebrate. All the corporate houses and industries must share photos of the celebration to BBMP<\/a> on the specified WhatsApp number,\u201d Shivakumar told the media on Saturday. BBMP is Bengaluru\u2019s civic body.<\/p>\n

There has, however, not been any official notification on this. The BBMP sources said the civic body has received verbal instructions from the Dy CM on getting the private companies to comply with the order.<\/p>\n

Shivakumar holds the portfolio of Bengaluru City affairs and water resources department, but most industries and technology companies are located outside of BBMP limits.<\/p>\n


When pointed out, minister Tangadagi said he would discuss the subject with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and request him to issue necessary orders if need be. \u201cThe upcoming Rajyotsava is very sentimental for us. All the companies should voluntarily celebrate the Day.\u201dThe Dy CM, however, has warned pro-Kannada groups against taking the law into their hands while celebrating the Rajyotsava Day. “This is a government order, but that doesn’t give a license to pro-Kannada organizations<\/a> to take the law into their hands.\u201d
Previously incidents of extreme vandalism were reported across the city in December 2023, with several offices and shops incurring hefty damages caused by pro-Kannada organizations. Post which the Karnataka legislature<\/a> has passed a law mandating 60% Kannada language signage across all commercial establishments.<\/p>\n

The Association for Information Technology<\/a> (AIT) – Bengaluru, representing over 450 member companies, said that while the move is welcomed, it should not be compulsory. \u201cBeing in Karnataka and celebrating the day is not an issue, however, it should be left to the discretion of private and public organizations,\u201d AIT President, Ananda Rao B said. He added that enforcement could lead to political controversies, with some inciting trouble for non-Kannada groups.<\/p>\n

Many individuals also took to social media to express their opinions on the matter, sparking a debate. Prakash Konnur, a medical professional, wrote on X, “It is the duty of everyone residing in Karnataka, including non-Kannadigas, to honour the state on Rajyotsava Day by hoisting the flag.” Another user, Amit Jalahali, countered, “Karnataka is a free state, and enforcing this will set us back.”
