The Maharashtra government has announced toll exemptions for light motor vehicles<\/a> at five entry points in Mumbai. This decision was made during a cabinet meeting on October 14 and will take effect from midnight, as stated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The toll booths affected are located at Vashi, Mulund’s Lal Bahadur Shastri road, Mulund Eastern Express Highway, Dahisar Western Express Highway, and Airoli. The toll for light motor vehicles was previously Rs 45. <\/p>\n

The exemption applies to personal and other light vehicles, which account for nearly 80% of the 3.50 lakh vehicles using these entry points daily, benefiting around 2.80 lakh vehicles.<\/p>\n

According to a report by The Indian Express<\/em>, citing senior official from Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), estimated a daily revenue loss of approximately Rs 50 lakh due to this exemption. Although light motor vehicles are more numerous, they contribute less in toll revenue compared to heavy vehicles.<\/p>\n

2.8 lk beneficiaries on an average

As many as 2.8 lakh vehicles on average are likely to benefit from the toll waiver announced by the Maharashtra government for entry points to Mumbai daily, reported PTI, citing an official as saying. <\/p>\n

An official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) said every day, 3.6 lakh vehicles pass through the five toll booths located on LBS Road and Eastern Express Highway at Mulund, Airoli Creek Bridge, Western Express Highway at Dahisar and Vashi Creek Brigade.<\/p>\n

“Of the total 3.6 lakh vehicles to pass these five toll plazas to enter the city, on an average 2.8 lakh are light motor vehicles,” PTI quoted the official.<\/p>\n

However, a transporters’ body, while welcoming the government’s decision, accused it of giving stepmotherly treatment to the fraternity.<\/p>\n

“As a member of the transport fraternity, it pains me to witness the stepmotherly treatment given to this sector, which plays a crucial role in providing essential services to the people of Mumbai,” said Bal Malkit Singh, chairman of the All India Motor Transport Congress’s core committee.<\/p>\n

He demanded that the toll waiver be extended to commercial vehicle operators and reiterated the demand to abolish border checkposts.<\/p>\n

Key move ahead of Maharashtra Assembly elections
<\/h2>\n

This move comes just before the Maharashtra Assembly elections<\/a> and addresses a long-standing demand. Raj Thackeray<\/a>, leader of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who has been vocal against toll collections, welcomed the decision. Thackeray stated, \u201cWe\u2019ve been fighting this for a long time, and finally, it\u2019s been achieved. Though the decision came late, it is a victory for the people. I only hope it\u2019s not just an election ploy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Toll collection at these entry points began in 2002 and was contracted to MEP Infrastructure Pvt Ltd in 2010 for a 16-year period, expiring in 2026. To cover the revenue loss, the government will compensate the concessionaire until the contract ends. Toll collection at the other four entry points will end in 2027, while Vashi may continue tolling heavy vehicles due to ongoing infrastructure projects, as per the Indian Express<\/em> report.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
