in the military next year, Veterans Minister Al Carns said.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The announcement follows <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/64b14c0d07d4b800133472e9\/LGBT_Veterans_Independent_Review.pdf\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">Lord Etherton\u2019s report<!-- --><\/a> last year, which revealed decades of bullying, assaults and expulsions of LGBT military members &#8211; often leaving them without income or pensions.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Carns told the House of Commons &#8220;the treatment of LGBT veterans was completely and utterly unacceptable&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Homosexuality was decriminalised in the UK in 1967, but a ban continued in the armed forces until 2000.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The Ministry of Defence said at the time that justification for the policy included &#8220;maintenance of operational effectiveness and efficiency&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But Lord Etherton&#8217;s report said there had been an &#8220;incomprehensible policy of homophobic bigotry&#8221; in the armed forces.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Lord Etherton, Britain&#8217;s first openly gay senior judge, found there was a culture of overt homophobia in the forces &#8211; enforced through bullying, blackmail and sexual assault.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Many gay service personnel were dismissed, lost out on job opportunities, and were shunned by families and friends.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">On the release of Lord Etherton&#8217;s report in July 2023, then prime minister Rishi Sunak apologised in Parliament, calling the ban \u201can appalling failure&#8221; of the British state.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The report made 49 recommendations to the government including:<!-- --><\/p>\n<ul class=\"sc-5c9c90b0-0 cnfHHs\">\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">Affected veterans to be given an &#8220;appropriate financial reward&#8221; capped at \u00a350m overall<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">The restoration of medals that had to be handed back on dismissal or discharge<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">The clarification of pension rights<!-- --><\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-8d73edac-0 ezcCTE\">The <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj08ld5vj86o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 kNHAVz\" rel=\"noopener\">presentation of a special veterans&#8217; badge<!-- --><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Speaking in the Commons, Carns said the government had &#8220;met 32&#8221; of the recommendations and &#8220;will meet the financial redress scheme by the end of this year with the launch in January next year&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Carns added that the Ministry of Defence was &#8220;working with experts across government to establish an appropriate financial redress scheme&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Labour backbencher Chris Ward said there was &#8220;concern among veterans&#8221;
