In response, officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) stated they will enhance market surveillance of air purifiers to ensure their quality. According to the TOI report, the central government is also expected to impose mandatory standards or a Quality Control Order (QCO) on these products, according to sources.

“Discussions on air pollution have begun. Looking at the air quality index (AQI) on mobile-phone, people, out of fear, buy air purifiers. Air purifiers make such false claims. We see air purifiers and so much is written, but nothing is there in it. There is just a fan in it, yet claims are still made,” Joshi said during an event for World Standards Day.

He also highlighted the importance of increasing consumer awareness as winter approaches, a time when air pollution in Delhi worsens due to crop residue burning in neighbouring states, reported TOI.

BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari told TOI that market surveillance has increased significantly over the past five years, from 15,000 to over 150,000 inspections annually, including checks on air purifiers, which will be intensified further.

Union Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare noted that market surveillance enables the government to take necessary actions to protect consumer interests, the TOI report said. She mentioned that the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) could initiate class actions against companies that violate standards.Currently, BIS has a standard for portable electric air purifiers (IS17531 of 2021), but compliance is not mandatory. Once a product falls under QCO, the manufacture, storage, and sale of non-BIS compliant products will be prohibited.Joshi also discussed plans to make BIS standards mandatory for public procurement on the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal, noted TOI.

Source link

As more people purchase air purifiers to combat pollution at home and in the office, especially with the annual rise in poor air quality in the NCR, Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi raised concerns on Monday about potential false claims by some manufacturers.
