Cybercriminals<\/a> have deceived people in many Asian countries using deepfakes<\/a>, according to a CNN report, which revealed that victims were scammed out of as much as $46 million. Hong Kong police<\/a> have arrested over two dozen individuals in connection with the scheme, which targeted men in countries ranging from Taiwan and Singapore to India.<\/p>\n

The arrests include 21 men and six women, who were operating from a 4,000-square-foot industrial unit in the Hung Hom district of the city. The suspects, aged between 21 and 34, were reportedly well-educated, with many holding degrees in digital media and technology. Police stated that the gang recruited them after they had attended local universities.<\/p>\n

Authorities allege that the suspects collaborated with IT specialists overseas to create a fake cryptocurrency platform, where victims were coerced into making investments. Explaining the scam\u2019s modus operandi, police said it typically began with a text message from a person posing as an attractive woman, claiming to have added the wrong number by mistake.<\/p>\n

The alleged scammers would then develop online relationships with their victims, gradually building a sense of intimacy before discussing future plans together. The criminal group was highly organized, with members divided into departments responsible for different stages of the scam. They even used a training manual to teach recruits how to exploit \u201cthe victim\u2019s sincerity and emotion,\u201d police said, sharing excerpts from the manual on Facebook.<\/p>\n

The training emphasized steps such as learning about a victim\u2019s worldview to create a \u201ctailor-made\u201d persona, inventing personal hardships like failed relationships or business ventures to \u201cdeepen the other person\u2019s trust,\u201d and finally painting a \u201cbeautiful vision\u201d of travel plans together to encourage the victim to invest.<\/p>\n


The scam had been running for nearly a year before police received a tip-off in August. During the raid, authorities recovered more than 100 cell phones, nearly $26,000 in cash, and several luxury watches.<\/div>\n
