The Canadian government is closely monitoring social media activities of Indian journalists and media in connection with alleged foreign interference<\/a>, TOI reported. <\/p>\n

A report, “Potential Foreign Information Manipulation and Interference Following PM Statement on Killing of Hardeep Nijjar,” has been submitted to the foreign interference commission. <\/p>\n

The report, dated September 26, was prepared by Canada’s rapid response mechanism<\/a> (RRM) unit. Its objective is to assess information manipulation and interference from India, China, and Russia, particularly after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau<\/a>‘s statement regarding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The report states, \u201cFollowing PM\u2019s statement that Canada\u2019s agencies were pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Indian govt and the killing of Nijjar, Modi-aligned outfits amplified several narratives that targeted PM Trudeau, Canada\u2019s High Commissioner to India, Canada\u2019s national security agencies, Canada\u2019s Punjabi Sikh diaspora, and Nijjar\u2019s political beliefs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nijjar, labeled as a terrorist by India, was at the center of heated commentary. The report highlights that narratives posted by ‘godi media’ described Trudeau and Canadian institutions as \u201cenablers of terrorism\u201d and accused them of \u201cfalling into the laps of Khalistani extremists.\u201d<\/p>\n


The report lists several narratives monitored by the RRM. These include posts portraying Canadian diplomats negatively, claims about Canada sheltering terrorist elements of the Khalistan movement<\/a>, and allegations that Nijjar was involved with militant or extremist outfits. One example cited was a post by Anand Ranganathan, suggesting that Trudeau has familial reasons for supporting Khalistan supporters.The report also notes claims that by granting Nijjar Canadian citizenship, Canada has pandered to terrorists. Additionally, narratives targeted NDP leader Jagmeet Singh as pro-Khalistan, claimed Pakistan\u2019s ISI is funding the Khalistan movement in Canada, and mentioned alleged ties between Trudeau and George Soros.<\/p>\n

The report mentions the disparity in follower numbers between Modi-aligned outlets and Canadian media like CBC and CTV News, stating, \u201cCanada\u2019s low subscriber numbers in comparison suggest Modi-aligned media<\/a> create a distinct advantage in amplifying negative narratives about Canada and its position on the killing of Nijjar.\u201d<\/p>\n
