India is fast becoming the creator of concepts for emerging models for climate-friendly businesses in Asia and attracting global capital, according to a top executive at British International Investment (BII), the UK’s development finance<\/a> institution and impact investor.<\/p>\n

“The beauty about India is it is the creator of concepts for emerging models. Developers in Southeast Asia<\/a> are looking to India. How is India developing? In fact, we run workshops on how Indian renewable power sector has evolved,” Srini Nagarajan, managing director and head of Asia at BII, told ET.<\/p>\n

Today, BII has a $2.3 billion portfolio in India and has committed to invest over $1 billion between 2022 and 2026.<\/p>\n

“India is not capital-starved. India is at the limelight of attracting global capital,” Nagarajan said, adding that the role of a development financial institution like BII is to crowd in investors by coming in early and “establish the proof of concept, bring it to a commercial stage and then take it to commercial investors”.<\/p>\n

The quality of capital and where it goes matters as much as quantum, he said. “If you have a bankable opportunity, we can bring in commercial investors, but it’s about creating the bankable opportunity where our role is.”<\/p>\n


Ayana Renewable Power and Fourth Partner Energy are among the renewable energy<\/a> companies BII has invested in India. It has also invested in battery swapping and recycling and is on course to invest in a battery storage company, targeting the full value chain of renewables. It has also committed $250 million to Mahindra & Mahindra’s electric vehicle<\/a> unit.Nagarajan didn’t confirm whether BII was seeking to exit Ayana. “At the end of the day, our job is to create entities, take it to a certain level. Once there are private investors who are coming there and our role as a DFI is complete, we will exit the business normally,” he said.The renewable generation business has “got commoditised” and BII is moving to invest in newer concepts such as energy storage<\/a>, biofuels, energy as a service and cooling solutions. BII is also keen on supporting the electricity transmission sector and infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs).<\/p>\n

Apart from directly investing in companies, BII has backed multiple venture capital funds in India with investment strategies as wide-ranging as climate tech, food & agri and healthcare. Among the funds it has backed are Elevar, Chiratae Ventures, CX Partners, Healthquad, Lok, PI Ventures, Stellaris and Aavishkaar.<\/p>\n

“The transmission sector in India lacks funding. The problem is more in the construction stage, land acquisition, last-mile connectivity. The DFI capital can come in very handy,” Nagarajan said.<\/p>\n

He said capital market solutions such as InvITs could provide answers for those segments of climate-friendly businesses where large amounts of capital will be required.<\/p>\n

“Commercial investors are still a bit nervous about investing in it (InvIT). DFIs are capable of taking greater risks and provide that anchoring support to InvIT. On the back of it a lot of retail investors can come in,” he said, adding that BII’s investments include those in renewables and warehouse InvITs.<\/p>\n

Nagarajan said DFIs like his could provide comfort to retail investors because of the diligence work they do before investing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
