Baba Vanga, the famous blind Bulgarian clairvoyant, predicted the possibility of an apocalypse starting as early as 2025. Meanwhile, Kushal Kumar, known as “India’s Nostradamus,” has also shared his own outlook for the year, foreseeing turbulence in several sectors. Kumar’s predictions suggest a year that begins with a renewed focus on aviation and tourism while there may be disruptions due to health crises and extreme weather events.

While these forecasts cast a shadow over the future, there is a perspective from a key man of the financial world. Ben Powell, Chief Investment Strategist for APAC at BlackRock Investment Institute, believes India could benefit from the increasingly complex geopolitical environment—if the country plays its cards right.

Powell said, while the global geopolitical situation may seem daunting, it could present unique opportunities for India.”When I think about a country like India, if they play the game skillfully, we can say that so far this is the case, and there is an ability to benefit from some of the geopolitical complexity, which for sure is causing worry, but also can create opportunity for those countries which are skillful and flexible enough to navigate what is a complicated environment,” Powell told ET Now.

Geopolitical tensions, such as those in the Middle East, add to global economic uncertainty. The Reserve Bank of India in its latest bulletin noted that despite these challenges, the country’s financial sector is well-positioned for productive investments, thanks to strong balance sheets and the government’s focus on capital expenditure. However, it cautioned that escalating geopolitical tensions remain a looming threat.

When asked how India compares to other nations in the current global landscape, Powell was unequivocal in his support. “When I think about my favourite mega forces, all five of them, India comes to mind straight away across all five,” he said.

India has become one of the prime investment destinations for global companies, driven by its manufacturing push and improvements in ease of doing business. As the world shifts away from its reliance on China, India is seen as an attractive alternative in global supply chains. Germany, for instance, is betting big on India. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who leads a high-level delegation to New Delhi, is betting to tap into India’s vast market as a way to reduce reliance on China, Reuters reported. From automotive to logistics sectors, German firms are optimistic about India’s growth potential, supported by a skilled workforce and robust economic growth.According to a survey by the network of German Chambers of Commerce Abroad (AHK) that Reuters saw, 51% of German companies operating in India plan to increase their investments in the next year. He noted that ETFs have made it easier for everyday investors, not just large institutions, to participate in the growth of capitalism. “It has allowed moms and pops households to be able to access the fruits of capitalist growth in a way that a generation ago really would have only been straightforward for bigger institutions,” he said.

As India’s financial markets continue to grow, the rise in the number of investors is evident. India has seen around 100 million people become investors in recent years, but with a population of 1.3 billion, there’s still immense potential, Powell observed.”But as a capitalist, I am excited to see that there is more access and more availability for more and more people all over the world to be able to tap into the benefits of the genius of certain companies and their leaders benefiting all of us over time,” he said.

Also Read: Indian bond ETFs to draw billions as Amundi to BlackRock join race

BlackRock, Amundi SA, and Janus Henderson’s Tabula Investment Management are just a few of the companies that have launched new ETFs focused on Indian debt.
